Position Overview

Are you passionate about empowering immigrant and refugee youth? Do you find satisfaction in guiding individuals towards achieving their educational, vocational, and social aspirations? If so, the part-time Youth Engagement Coordinator role at the International Institute of St. Louis could be an ideal fit for you. In this position, you will engage directly with youth clients, facilitating their successful integration into the community.

Your main focus will be to support the After School Tutoring Initiative, which offers academic assistance, skill enhancement, and social development opportunities to high school students from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Additionally, you will contribute to the Teen Summer Learning Experience, a themed program designed to foster learning and engagement during the summer months. Both initiatives involve regular interactions with participants, field excursions, and various administrative responsibilities.


Working Hours: Monday - Thursday 3-6 pm


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver culturally aware and equitable services with minimal oversight.
  • Assist in program-related activities, including recruitment and enrollment.
  • Support individual youth participants or groups with academic assistance and skill-building activities.
  • Help manage volunteer tutors effectively.
  • Address emotional or behavioral challenges that may arise during program hours.
  • Lead programs and activities in the absence of the Program Coordinator.
  • Assist with concluding session activities and evaluations.
  • Maintain records of clients and volunteers in the database.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Cultural sensitivity and adaptability.
  • Strong commitment to working with immigrant and refugee youth aged 14-21.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others and work independently.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Good conflict resolution abilities.
  • Dependability and punctuality are crucial.
  • Proficiency in a second language (Spanish, Dari/Pashtu, or Swahili) is preferred.
  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Capability to meet deadlines consistently.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft applications.

Educational Background and Experience

  • High School Diploma; some college coursework is preferred.
  • Experience working with adolescents and/or students with limited English proficiency in an educational context.
