Job Summary

The Director, Research Services Infrastructure will serve as a key member of the Fralin Life Sciences Institute senior leadership team, responsible for developing strategic approaches to advance and sustain research service facilities and collaborations that support Institute and other campus research infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guidance and oversight of FLSI research service facilities, including genomics, mass spectrometry, and imaging.
  • Career coaching and supervision of FLSI research service facility leadership, with a focus on building a culture of networking with external research service facility leaders.
  • Collaboration with FLSI and other university personnel to obtain, coordinate, and direct data analytics and assessment of FLSI research service facility activities for dissemination to stakeholders, collaborators, and partners.
  • Development and delivery of presentations for diverse audiences on aspects of FLSI research service facilities and associated capabilities.
  • Provision of timely research-related workshops highlighting FLSI research service facilities and associated capabilities.
  • Collaboration with FLSI and other university personnel to create sustainable data management capabilities and data sharing workflows.
  • Participation as principal investigator or co-principal investigator in developing and submitting grant proposals for funding/expanding FLSI research services infrastructure.
  • Proactive development of new research service opportunities through strategic analysis of current and anticipated needs using data analytics and assessment.
  • Work with FLSI and other university personnel to develop federally compliant rate structures for research facility services and ensure timely billing for work performed.
  • Ensuring compliance of FLSI research service facilities with all health and safety requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or MS in the Life Sciences or related fields with substantial experience.
  • Relevant experience in biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry, or the research service facility environment (academic, national laboratory, or industrial).
  • Strong technical background.
  • Experience with proposal development to achieve federal and corporate extramural funding.
  • Experience with oversight of professional laboratory personnel, including mentorship and professional development.
  • Demonstrated creativity, independence, high motivation, and energy, and excellent communication skills.
  • Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as within research and project groups.
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative team environment.
  • Proven experience with budget development.
