Job Summary
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Analytical Chemist to join our team at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. This position will work in the Analytical Chemistry Research Laboratory service center with a primary focus on supporting research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the Vet Med Analytical Research Laboratory with minimal supervision, focusing on safety and quality.
- Work as a technical expert in analytical chemistry for various clients, including principal investigators, project directors, and research staff.
- Develop and validate custom analytical methods using laboratory instrumentation based on client needs.
- Perform elemental and trace organic analyses using ICP-MS and LC-MS/MS in various sample matrices.
- Maintain and support laboratory equipment, including calibration and management of service contracts.
- Manage laboratory financials, including purchasing supplies and coordinating project pricing.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS and/or ICP-MS operations.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and solve complex problems.
- Proficient in safely handling and disposing of hazardous chemicals.
- Experience in data management and redundant backups.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in Chemistry or a related field.
- 5 or more years of hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS.
- 5 or more years of hands-on experience with ICP-MS.
- Experience with method development and validation.
- Experience with complex sample preparation techniques.
- Familiarity with regulatory guidelines and compliance requirements.
