Denver, Colorado, United States Primoris Full time

Job Overview:

The Lead Electrical Engineer will play a pivotal role in guiding the internal electrical engineering processes for assigned projects within a prominent Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) firm focused on photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

This role encompasses oversight of electrical design and analysis, consideration of field construction methodologies in design choices, development of designs for DC, MVAC, and LVAC auxiliary collection systems, and providing mentorship to junior engineers.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accountable for creating both preliminary and detailed designs grounded in engineering principles for PV and BESS initiatives.

Enhance and develop electrical engineering calculation tools to determine cable, conduit, OCPD, and electrical equipment specifications based on project demands.

Collaborate with the Estimating team to support design concepts and optimize the Bill of Materials (BOM) and Schedule of Values (SOV). Guide CAD designers in producing well-structured site layouts and single line diagrams.

Maintain and update a comprehensive database for various equipment utilized in PV and BESS designs as new versions become available.

Generate construction details and Bills of Material for diverse construction work packages related to assigned projects.

Review utility interconnection documents such as facility studies, interconnection agreements, or power purchase agreements to ensure project designs comply with these requirements.

Provide design insights and support to the PV Performance group to facilitate accurate production modeling for RFP and contracted projects.

Implement innovative engineering strategies for cost optimization in utility-scale PV and BESS projects, develop design matrices for comparative analysis, and preserve these for future reference.

Assist the Procurement team and Project Engineers with inquiries regarding product compatibility, BOM quantities, rationale behind design decisions, and necessary equipment specifications for assigned projects.

Participate in mandatory training sessions covering new products, installation techniques, and safety protocols.

Gain expertise in modules, racking systems, inverters, batteries, DC-DC converters, Battery Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), MV switchgear, transformers, and other essential components for effective utility-scale PV and BESS project designs.

Review and provide feedback on Engineer of Record (EOR) drawings and studies to ensure project costs are managed effectively in comparison to internal preliminary designs.

Offer mentorship to fellow Electrical Engineers, Design Leads, Project Engineers, and CAD Designers.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution. A minimum of 3 years of experience in Solar PV design or the solar construction sector. Over 8 years of experience in Electrical Engineering and/or related work in Solar PV or other Renewable Energy Technologies.

Professional experience in Utility PV contract negotiations within an EPC context.
Professional Engineering License is preferred.

PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Proficiency in AutoCAD, ETAP, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience with other electrical engineering simulation software (e.g., SAM, Cymcap, DIgSILENT, WinIGS) is advantageous.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to interpret drawings, single line diagrams, and specifications.
Understanding of manufacturer's design parameters, application limitations, and installation guidelines.

Familiarity with creating PV site plans and single line drawings (both DC and AC systems). Capacity to prioritize, multitask, and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.

Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive demeanor in challenging situations.
Exemplary organizational skills and professionalism.

The ideal candidates are team-oriented individuals who are solution-focused, capable of training and mentoring others, and consistently seek to enhance processes, efficiency, and communication among stakeholders.
