Job Overview:

The Lead Electrical Engineer will spearhead the internal electrical engineering efforts for assigned photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects within a prominent Engineer, Procure, and Construct (EPC) organization.

This role encompasses supervision of electrical design and analysis, consideration of field construction methodologies in design choices, development and optimization of designs, and mentorship of junior engineering staff.


PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accountable for creating both preliminary and detailed designs grounded in engineering principles for PV and BESS initiatives.

Enhance and develop electrical engineering calculation tools to determine cable, conduit, overcurrent protective device (OCPD), and electrical equipment specifications based on project needs.

Collaborate with the Estimating team to support design concepts and optimize the Bill of Materials (BOM) and Schedule of Values (SOV). Guide CAD designers in producing well-structured site layouts and single line diagrams.

Establish and maintain a comprehensive database for various equipment utilized in PV and BESS designs, updating it as new versions are released.

Formulate construction details and Bill of Materials for different construction work packages associated with assigned projects.

Examine utility interconnection documents such as facility studies, interconnection agreements, or power purchase agreements to ensure project designs comply with those requirements.

Provide design support and input to the PV Performance group to facilitate the development of accurate production models for proposals and contracted projects.

Implement innovative engineering principles aimed at cost optimization for utility-scale PV and BESS projects, develop design matrices for comparative analysis, and maintain these for future reference.

Assist the Procurement team and Project Engineers with inquiries regarding product compatibility, BOM quantities, design rationale, and assumptions utilized in preliminary designs and required equipment specifications for assigned projects.

Participate in mandatory training sessions focused on new products, installation techniques, and safety protocols.

Gain expertise in modules, racking systems, inverters, batteries, DC-DC converters, battery management systems (BMS), energy management systems (EMS), medium voltage switchgear, transformers, and other materials essential for the effective design of utility-scale PV and BESS projects.

Review and provide feedback on engineering of record (EOR) drawings and studies to ensure project costs are managed effectively in comparison to internal preliminary designs.

Mentor other Electrical Engineers, Design Leads, Project Engineers, and CAD Designers.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution. A minimum of 3 years of experience in Solar PV Design or the solar construction sector. Over 8 years of experience in Electrical Engineering and/or work related to Solar PV or other Renewable Energy Technologies.

Professional experience with Utility PV contract negotiations in an EPC environment.
Professional Engineering License is preferred.

PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Proficiency in AutoCAD, ETAP, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience with other electrical engineering simulation software (SAM, Cymcap, DIgSILENT, and WinIGS) is advantageous.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to interpret drawings, single line diagrams, and specifications.
Understanding of manufacturer design parameters, application limitations, and installation guidelines.

Familiarity with creating PV site plans and single line drawings (DC and AC systems).Capability to prioritize, multitask, and follow through on assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision.

Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive demeanor in challenging situations.
