Position Overview

Summary:

The George Washington University Police Department is in search of dedicated and driven individuals for the role of Police Lieutenant. Our mission is to establish ourselves as the leading university law enforcement agency in the area, offering competitive compensation, superior equipment, and comprehensive training. The GW Police Department is tasked with delivering primary law enforcement and public safety services to a diverse community of 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses in Washington, D.C. We are committed to fostering the professional growth and development of our officers while promoting public safety and community engagement based on our core values of accountability, trust, and transparency.

Reporting Structure:

Under the direction of the Operations Captain, the Police Lieutenant is responsible for managing and overseeing administrative and operational functions for their designated shift within the GW Police Department. This position is crucial to the leadership team that oversees all public safety operations for the University. The Lieutenant is tasked with managing shift deployment, addressing incident and crisis situations, supervising training, and scheduling personnel. Additionally, this role is integral to recruitment, hiring, and establishing ongoing training and development goals in supervision, leadership, personnel evaluation, and tactical response. A strong emphasis on campus and community engagement is essential to enhance our community policing efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures, setting goals and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Oversee the employee evaluation process, providing leadership and guidance to staff members.
  • Administer disciplinary actions, recognize exemplary employee performance, and lead operations that prioritize customer service and community policing.
  • Prepare and maintain various reports and records related to campus safety initiatives for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Act as the Incident Commander during significant criminal events, natural disasters, demonstrations, or special occasions.
  • Collaborate with campus and community stakeholders on public safety matters.
  • Serve as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies, government officials, and community leaders.

  • Supervise crime scene investigations, including evidence collection and report reviews.
  • Oversee apprehensions and arrests, ensuring proper charges are filed.
  • Testify in court or administrative hearings regarding violations.
  • Review body-worn and in-car camera footage to ensure compliance with departmental policies.
  • Assume responsibilities of the Operations Captain in their absence.
  • Perform traditional police duties as necessary, including working weekends and holidays.

Additional Duties:

Other related responsibilities may be assigned as necessary. The absence of specific duties does not limit the supervisor's ability to assign logically related tasks.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will possess a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 6 years of professional experience, or a Master's degree with at least 4 years of relevant experience. Degree requirements may be substituted with a combination of education, training, and experience.
