Job Overview

The GW Police Department is tasked with delivering primary law enforcement and public safety services to a diverse community of approximately 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses in Washington, D.C. Key Responsibilities
The Police Corporal, reporting to a Police Sergeant, serves as the operational supervisor responsible for ensuring security and protection for the University community. This includes:
  • Assisting in the preparation of daily assignments and the weekly duty roster, based on assessments of individual officer skills and performance levels.
  • Acting on behalf of the Sergeant during their absence, including the preparation, approval, and posting of the weekly duty roster or special assignments.
  • Serving as a liaison with other University divisions and departments during events or incidents, as well as with external law enforcement agencies.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned, which may include tasks logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED, along with four years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor's degree in a related field. The degree must be conferred by the start date of employment. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a District of Columbia Special Police Commission, meeting all prescribed requirements, including firearms qualifications.
  • Successful completion of a physical, drug screening, and psychological evaluation approved by the GW Police Department prior to employment.
  • Valid driver's license and eligibility to operate GW vehicles throughout the duration of employment.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship and a minimum age of 21, as mandated by local regulations.
  • Ongoing proficiency with firearms and police equipment throughout employment.
  • Availability for rotating shifts.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited state or federal law enforcement training academy, preferably including the District of Columbia.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of criminal law and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
  • Experience in a university or similar non-profit environment.
