Overview of Responsibilities:
The incumbent functions as a University Law Enforcement Officer within the Police Operations division, contributing to the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management Services. Daily tasks and responsibilities are assigned by the shift supervisor, with the officer operating under direct oversight. Performance is evaluated based on outcomes.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Upholds and enforces laws and regulations; monitors, reports, and reacts to unlawful activities on university property, adhering to institutional policies and local laws.
- Secures university facilities and properties, managing access through physical controls and ongoing surveillance.
- Responds to alarm systems designed to protect individuals and assets.
- Conducts initial and follow-up inquiries into various incidents, documenting findings through appropriate reporting techniques.
- Investigates motor vehicle accidents occurring on university grounds and collaborates with local law enforcement as necessary.
- Engages in community outreach initiatives, applying community-oriented policing strategies.
- Maintains safe operational practices and ensures cleanliness of equipment utilized in daily functions.
- Responds to service requests that require coordination with local emergency services.
- Utilizes effective interviewing methods during investigations and ensures preservation of evidence.
- Possesses the physical capabilities to perform essential police duties, including pursuit and apprehension of suspects, and managing various physical challenges.
- May be required to work in diverse environments, including construction sites and during inclement weather.
- Delivers professional customer service and assistance to the university community, including students and staff.
- Performs additional related tasks as assigned, which may include support roles in the Public Safety Operations Center.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of at least 60 semester hours of college coursework from an accredited institution; or
- A combination of a High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of two years as a contract security officer; or
- Two years of active duty in the US military with an honorable discharge; or
- Two years of full-duty experience with a recognized police department on a college campus or in a municipality.
Must successfully complete the Campus Public Safety Institute upon hire if lacking prior law enforcement experience. Must also obtain and maintain Campus Special Police Officer status as per local regulations.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years old and a US citizen.
- Possession of a valid driver's license is required.
- Completion of a recognized law enforcement training academy within the last two years is necessary.
- May need to pass a physical assessment and standard police test.
- Flexibility in scheduling is essential, including availability for nights and weekends.
