Position Overview:

The George Washington University Police Department is in search of dedicated professionals for the role of Police Lieutenant. The GW Police Department is tasked with delivering essential law enforcement and safety services to a diverse community of 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses in Washington, D.C. Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee administrative and operational functions for assigned shifts within the GW Police Department.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to manage all public safety operations for the University.
  • Direct deployment planning, incident management, training, and scheduling for assigned personnel.
  • Play a crucial role in recruitment, hiring, and developing training goals for personnel management and tactical response.
  • Emphasize community engagement and enhance campus policing initiatives.
  • Establish policies and procedures while assessing program efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Manage employee evaluations and provide leadership to staff within assigned operational areas.
  • Administer disciplinary actions and recognize commendable employee performance.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive reports related to campus safety programs for submission to relevant agencies.
  • Act as Incident Commander during significant incidents and events.
  • Engage with the campus community on public safety matters.
  • Serve as a liaison with local law enforcement and community leaders.
  • Address public concerns and ensure appropriate follow-up on safety issues.
  • Supervise crime scene investigations and oversee evidence collection and reporting.
  • Testify in court regarding law enforcement actions and decisions.
  • Review body camera footage to ensure compliance with departmental policies.
  • Assume the responsibilities of the Operations Captain when necessary.
  • May perform traditional police duties as required.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field along with 6 years of pertinent professional experience, or a Master's degree with 4 years of experience. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will also be considered.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must maintain a District of Columbia Special Police Commission and meet all associated requirements.
  • Successful completion of a physical, drug screening, and mental examination prior to employment.
  • Completion of an accredited law enforcement training academy is required.
  • Valid driver's license and eligibility to operate university vehicles.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship and compliance with age requirements.
  • Maintain proficiency with firearms and police equipment throughout employment.
  • Availability for rotating shifts is necessary.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of criminal law and campus safety regulations.
  • Experience in a university or similar environment is advantageous.
