Position Overview

Summary:

The George Washington University Police Department is on the lookout for dedicated professionals to fill the role of Police Lieutenant. Our mission is to establish ourselves as the leading university law enforcement agency in the area, recognized for our competitive compensation, superior equipment, and extensive training. The GW Police Department is tasked with delivering essential law enforcement and public safety services to a vibrant community of 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses.

As a Police Lieutenant, you will report directly to the Operations Captain and play a crucial role in managing and overseeing the operations of your assigned shift. This leadership position is vital in ensuring the effective execution of all public safety functions within the University. Your responsibilities will include strategic deployment planning, addressing incidents and crises, supervising training, and managing schedules. Additionally, you will be involved in recruitment, goal setting, and the ongoing development of training programs focused on supervision, leadership, personnel evaluation, and tactical response.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures, setting clear goals and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Oversee the employee evaluation process, providing strong leadership to staff within your operational area.
  • Administer disciplinary actions, acknowledge commendable employee performance, and foster a culture of excellent customer service and community engagement.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive reports and records related to campus safety initiatives for submission to relevant authorities.
  • Act as the Incident Commander during significant incidents, disasters, or special events.
  • Collaborate closely with the campus community on public safety matters.
  • Serve as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies and community leaders, advising University administration on safety issues.
  • Engage with the public to address safety concerns and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Provide oversight during patrol assignments and manage departmental field activities.
  • Conduct investigations related to fleet vehicle incidents and supervise crime scene investigations.
  • Review and approve reports prior to submission to ensure compliance with departmental policies.
  • Testify in court regarding law enforcement matters as needed.
  • Assume the responsibilities of the Operations Captain in their absence.
  • Perform traditional police duties when necessary, including working outside of regular hours.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field along with 6 years of professional experience, or a Master's degree with 4 years of experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must obtain and maintain a District of Columbia Special Police Commission.
  • Successful completion of a physical, drug screening, and mental examination prior to employment.
  • Completion of an accredited law enforcement training academy is required.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary for driving University vehicles.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age.
  • Proficiency with firearms and police equipment must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Availability for rotating shifts is required.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of criminal law and campus safety regulations.
  • Experience in a university or similar environment is advantageous.
