Position Overview

The Chief Estimator for Self-Perform Construction will oversee a team of Estimators with diverse expertise in self-perform construction. This role is crucial for maintaining ongoing relationships with existing clients, securing new contracts, and achieving targeted revenue and overhead contributions.

This position will involve collaboration with Regional General Managers to assess and select viable opportunities, working closely with Operations to devise effective strategies for success. The Chief Estimator will allocate resources for pricing the work, ensure adherence to established best practices, and formulate risk management strategies to uphold Graycor's risk profile. A particular focus will be on steel erection, equipment setting, and piping installation within sectors such as energy transition, gas infrastructure, steel manufacturing, and other industrial projects. The ideal candidate will be results-oriented, promote a collaborative work environment, actively mentor Estimators in the department, and drive continuous improvement across all business aspects.

The Chief Estimator will report directly to the Estimating Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with regional General Managers to meet sales objectives and optimize Estimating Resources.
  • Oversee the proposal development process from Request for Proposal to Proposal Submission.
  • Develop conceptual estimates to support preconstruction initiatives and client interactions.
  • Utilize prior experience in self-performance work to enhance the business's competitive positioning.
  • Supervise and/or perform estimating for structural steel, equipment setting, and piping installation.
  • Manage the identification, solicitation, and assessment of Subcontractors for proposal support.
  • Analyze labor strategies, installation methods, proposal timelines, and commercial terms.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of estimates to ensure alignment with historical data, market conditions, and project specifics.
  • Enhance and expand estimating templates, historical cost databases, conceptual estimating models, and self-perform estimating sheets for scalability across the business.
  • Provide insights and expertise in addressing operational and marketing challenges.
  • Mentor and train Estimators and operational staff on self-perform estimating, subcontractor proposal evaluation, and departmental software.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, a commitment to system improvement, and a passion for developing talent.
  • Over 10 years of experience in the industrial construction sector, focusing on proposal development or project execution in a self-perform context. A Bachelor's degree is preferred, with an emphasis on piping estimation being advantageous.
  • Familiarity with guaranteed maximum price and lump sum competitive bidding environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient proposal presentation abilities.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Suite applications.
