Job Summary

The Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Park Maintenance Assistant to join our team in the Channel Coast District/Santa Barbara Sector/El Capitan State Beach. As a Park Maintenance Assistant, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks to maintain park facilities and grounds, including:

  • Performing skilled and semi-skilled duties necessary to maintain park facilities and grounds
  • Assisting in the maintenance and housekeeping duties of facilities
  • Acting as a lead person for seasonal employees, CDF crews, or other agencies crews
  • Assisting in facility maintenance projects
  • Operating and maintaining equipment and tools used in maintenance
  • Performing unskilled maintenance as required

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Working under the supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor or their designee
  • Performing a variety of tasks to maintain park facilities and grounds, including cleaning, repairing, and maintaining buildings, roads, and other park infrastructure
  • Assisting in the maintenance and housekeeping duties of facilities, including cleaning, restocking, and performing other tasks as needed
  • Acting as a lead person for seasonal employees, CDF crews, or other agencies crews, including supervising and training staff as needed
  • Assisting in facility maintenance projects, including planning, coordinating, and executing projects as needed
  • Operating and maintaining equipment and tools used in maintenance, including vehicles, machinery, and hand tools
  • Performing unskilled maintenance as required, including tasks such as cleaning, painting, and repairing

Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must:

  • Have a valid California Driver's License
  • Be able to pass a background investigation
  • Be able to pass a medical clearance
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines and changing priorities
  • Be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Be able to communicate effectively with staff, visitors, and other stakeholders

Working Conditions

The successful candidate will be required to work in a variety of environments, including:

  • Outdoor environments, including parks, trails, and other natural areas
  • Indoor environments, including offices, maintenance shops, and other facilities
  • Heavy physical work, including lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling
  • Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and loud noises
  • May work in remote locations

Special Requirements

The position requires a valid California Driver's License and the ability to pass a background investigation and medical clearance. The position is designated as not telework eligible.
