Position Summary: MSK is on the lookout for a driven, innovative, and accomplished individual to lead its RNA Therapeutics Laboratory. This role is pivotal in establishing a research and development hub within the newly formed Center for Cancer Vaccines at MSK, a cornerstone of our immuno-oncology initiative.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct the establishment of a comprehensive mRNA vaccine pipeline, focusing on platform optimization and GMP manufacturing for clinical applications.
  • Supervise the design and development of RNA vaccines, including enhancements to optimize mRNA templates, structures, stability, and production techniques such as in vitro transcription, purification, and lipid nanoparticle encapsulation.
  • Oversee quality control for RNA vaccines, developing and refining analytical assays to assess the quality and effectiveness of mRNA vaccines.
  • Facilitate the transfer of these assays to the GMP-Therapeutics Core Facility and provide collaborative support for vaccine production.
  • Guide and mentor technical staff while setting the strategic scientific direction of the laboratory based on emerging technologies and the needs of MSK's scientific community.
  • Manage operational responsibilities, including advanced methods development, scientific consultation, and engagement with the broader scientific community to ensure a cutting-edge operation.
  • Handle financial and human resource management, including recruitment, training, mentoring, and staff development.
  • Collaborate closely with the MSK GMP-Therapeutics Core Facility to align the laboratory's objectives with institutional strategic goals, reporting to the Cancer Vaccine Center director and a faculty oversight committee.
Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in either academic or commercial settings.
  • Hands-on experience in experimental mRNA vaccine biology and the clinical development of GMP-grade mRNA vaccines; experience in new assay development is highly valued.
  • Proficiency in mRNA customization, synthesis, and purification.
  • Expertise in mRNA-LNP platforms, cGMP process flow, and analytical panel development; familiarity with IND applications is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in managing laboratory personnel and overseeing daily laboratory operations is essential.
