Job Summary

The Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Virginia's School of Medicine seeks a highly skilled Senior Lab Specialist to provide scientific and technical support for laboratory-based research in molecular genetics, with a focus on DNA repair, DNA recombination, and CRISPR-mediated gene editing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage laboratory operations, including experiment design, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist senior scientists in developing methodologies and protocols for ongoing lab projects.
  • Train new lab members in scientific techniques and procedures.
  • Collect and enter data into electronic media, and perform routine laboratory maintenance.
  • Order lab supplies and manage inventory.
  • Perform routine laboratory data analysis and procedures.
  • Act as a laboratory manager, overseeing laboratory safety and radiation requirements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 9 years of experience in a lab technician role, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Master's degree in molecular biology or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to work accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to mentor less-experienced lab personnel.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Physical Demands

This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments, as well as keyboarding and other bench work and procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
