Lead Engineer for Actuator Testing

Position Overview
We are seeking a meticulous and enthusiastic leader to head our actuator testing division. The team lead test engineer will oversee laboratory evaluations of critical servo actuation components and subsystems essential for electric VTOL aircraft.
The insights gained from these evaluations will guide our hardware design initiatives and facilitate the path to type certification and beyond.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead a team of engineers in the design, construction, and operation of actuator testing facilities and setups.
- Collaborate with design engineers and area leads to ensure accurate replication of functions and failures in the testing environment by quantifying hardware and software attributes that influence test accuracy.
- Deliver test outcomes for company development, validation, and verification activities, ensuring safety during flight tests, and advancing test facilities through conformity and certification events.
- Develop testing capabilities, processes, and strategies that promote high-quality and efficient evaluation of Joby products.
- Support the growth of test engineers and technicians through on-the-job training, mentoring, and formal career development opportunities.
- Review test plans, procedures, and data, providing detailed feedback on enhancements and technical methodologies.
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with a hands-on approach and a readiness to engage in active testing activities, including laboratory tests and setup. A strong analytical background in at least one relevant discipline, along with robust cross-disciplinary engineering skills, is essential.
Applicants should possess a deep understanding of relevant testing and aerospace industry standards and equipment, with a B.S. in mechanical engineering or a related field. Excellent problem-solving and communication skills are a must, along with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in aerospace, testing, or a related field, or a Master's degree with 6 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S./Ph.D. in a relevant discipline.
- At least 2 years of team leadership experience.
- Direct experience in industrial test laboratory settings.
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems, preferably National Instruments LabView and cDAQ/cRIO.
- Experience with CAD software, ideally Dassault Systems Catia & Enovia.
- Proficiency in machine shop skills, including lathe, mill, welder, and other equipment.
- Experience with high voltage electronics and testing aircraft mechanical systems.
- Background in aircraft homebuilding, rapid prototyping, or aerospace startups is advantageous.
Compensation and Benefits
Joby offers a competitive compensation package that includes base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this role is competitive and will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
