Position Overview

This section outlines the primary responsibilities and objectives of the role.

Under the guidance of the echocardiography department leadership, the Pediatric Cardiac Ultrasound Specialist is tasked with conducting and obtaining high-quality cardiac ultrasound examinations. This role includes assisting with intricate congenital cardiac assessments and striving for proficiency in understanding complex congenital heart structures and functions. The specialist will exhibit a solid understanding of standard cardiac anatomy, physiology, and hemodynamics while working towards expertise in congenital heart conditions and related interventions. Collaboration with department leadership is essential to ensure that the imaging performed addresses the clinical inquiries effectively. The specialist will perform diagnostic cardiac ultrasound studies on patients of varying ages and settings, assisting in the collection of ultrasound and other relevant medical data to aid in accurate diagnoses. Critical thinking, sound judgment, and technical skills are vital in this position. The specialist will also engage with leadership to maintain equipment functionality and participate in outreach initiatives, weekend, holiday coverage, and on-call responsibilities as required. Accurate record-keeping and reporting on procedures and equipment usage are also expected.

All duties must be performed in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including service standards and code of conduct.

  • Review patient indications and relevant medical history prior to conducting echocardiograms.
  • Conduct and acquire standard cardiac ultrasound studies while assisting with complex congenital assessments.
  • Implement appropriate infection control measures.
  • Identify patients per protocol, ensuring a welcoming environment and providing clear explanations of the examination process.
  • Utilize ultrasound technology to capture diagnostic images in accordance with established protocols.
  • Present and discuss echocardiographic findings with physicians, obtaining additional images as necessary.
  • Perform quantitative evaluations of echocardiographic data following imaging protocols.
  • Assist in gathering essential ultrasound and medical data to support accurate medical diagnoses.
  • Complete studies efficiently.
  • Document observations and measurements in the cardiology PACS for review by the interpreting physician.
  • Ensure that studies are properly archived in the PACS network and report any technical issues to leadership.
  • Support leadership in maintaining ultrasound equipment and accessories.
  • Participate in regular quality improvement meetings.
Qualifications

A combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with any required licenses or certifications, is acceptable.

Education: Successful completion of an accredited cardiac ultrasound program is required; a bachelor's degree is preferred.

Experience: No prior experience is necessary.

Licensure/Certification: Must possess a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential, Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) credential from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or a Registered Congenital Cardiovascular Sonographer (RCCS) credential from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and cardiac pathology relevant to ultrasound diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with computer systems and software used in the field.
  • Understanding of PACS principles and electronic imaging systems.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound physics and safety protocols related to ultrasound procedures.
  • Familiarity with ultrasound diagnostic techniques and equipment.

Salary is determined based on the role's requirements and level.

Compensation may also be influenced by education, experience, skills, location, and internal equity, as well as market data.

Typically, new hires start at the minimum to mid-range salary.
