Position Overview

This section outlines the primary responsibilities and objectives of the role.

Under the guidance of the echocardiography department leadership, the cardiac sonographer II is tasked with independently conducting and capturing both standard and intricate congenital cardiac ultrasound examinations. This role requires a thorough understanding of congenital heart defects, cardiac conditions, surgical interventions, and hemodynamic principles, along with the imaging techniques necessary to address clinical inquiries. The sonographer will perform diagnostic cardiac ultrasound procedures on patients of varying ages across diverse clinical settings. Additionally, this position involves mentoring echocardiography trainees and utilizing prior imaging and medical history to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the patient's condition, facilitating accurate diagnoses. The role demands strong critical thinking, judgment, and technical skills. The sonographer is also responsible for ensuring the operational readiness and maintenance of ultrasound equipment. Participation in outreach initiatives, weekend and holiday coverage, and on-call duties may be required. Accurate record-keeping and reporting on equipment, procedures, and billing are essential.

Key Responsibilities

All duties must be performed in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including service standards and the code of conduct.

  • Review exam indications and relevant medical information prior to conducting echocardiograms.
  • Independently perform and acquire both standard and complex congenital cardiac transthoracic ultrasound studies.
  • Implement appropriate infection control measures.
  • Identify patients according to policy, providing a warm introduction and explaining the examination process to create a supportive environment.
  • Utilize ultrasound technology to capture diagnostic images of patients with varying anatomical complexities, following established imaging protocols.
  • Present and discuss echocardiographic findings with physicians, obtaining additional images as necessary.
  • Conduct quantitative evaluations of echocardiographic data in line with imaging standards.
  • Incorporate previous imaging and medical records to enhance understanding of the patient's condition for accurate diagnosis.
  • Complete studies efficiently.
  • Document observations and measurements in the cardiology PACS for review by qualified medical professionals.
  • Ensure studies are archived appropriately within the cardiology PACS network and assist leadership in resolving technical issues.
  • Maintain ultrasound equipment and accessories, ensuring functionality and participating in troubleshooting as needed.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of records for research purposes.
  • Engage in the training of echocardiography students.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications

A combination of education and experience that equips the candidate with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with any required licenses or certifications, is acceptable.

Education: Completion of an accredited cardiac ultrasound program is required; a bachelor's degree is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience in congenital cardiac sonography with progressively responsible roles.

Licensure/Certification: Must possess the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential, along with Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) and Fetal Echocardiography (FE) certifications from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

Alternatively, candidates may hold the Registered Congenital Cardiovascular Sonographer (RCCS) credential from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), as well as Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) and Fetal Echocardiography (FE) certifications from ARDMS.

  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and both congenital and acquired cardiac conditions as they relate to ultrasound diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with computer systems and software relevant to the functional area.
  • Understanding of PACS network principles and electronic image processing systems.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound physics and safety protocols related to ultrasound procedures and equipment.
  • Expertise in ultrasound diagnostic techniques and instrumentation.

Compensation

Salary is determined based on the role's level and requirements.

Compensation may also be influenced by education, experience, skills, location, and other relevant factors, as well as internal equity and market alignment.

Typically, new hires will start at the minimum to mid-point of the salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Salary Range (1.0 FTE): $155,875.20 to $176,737.60
