Position Overview

This section outlines the primary responsibilities and objectives of the role.

Under the guidance of the echocardiography department leadership, the cardiac sonographer II is tasked with independently conducting and acquiring both standard and intricate congenital cardiac ultrasound examinations. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of congenital heart defects, cardiac conditions, surgical interventions, and the imaging techniques necessary to address clinical inquiries. The sonographer will perform diagnostic cardiac ultrasound assessments on patients of varying ages and in diverse clinical settings. Additionally, the role involves mentoring various echocardiography trainees. Utilizing prior imaging and relevant medical history is essential for a thorough understanding of each patient's condition to aid in diagnosis. The position demands strong critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and technical proficiency. The sonographer will also ensure that all equipment is operational and properly maintained. Participation in outreach clinics, weekend and holiday coverage, and on-call duties may be required. Accurate record-keeping and reporting on equipment usage, procedures performed, and billing are also essential responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

The following tasks are typical for this job classification. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Employees are expected to comply with all Joint Commission Requirements, including but not limited to cultural sensitivity, patient care, patient rights, ethical treatment, safety protocols, emergency preparedness, teamwork, and ongoing education.

All duties must be performed in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including Service Standards and the Code of Conduct.

  • Review exam indications and relevant medical history prior to conducting echocardiograms.
  • Independently perform and acquire both standard and complex congenital cardiac transthoracic ultrasound studies.
  • Implement appropriate infection control measures.
  • Identify patients according to policy, providing a warm introduction and explaining the examination process to patients and their families.
  • Utilize ultrasound technology to capture diagnostic images on patients with varying anatomical complexities, adhering to established imaging protocols.
  • Present and discuss echocardiographic findings with physicians, obtaining additional images as needed.
  • Conduct quantitative evaluations of echocardiographic data in line with imaging protocols.
  • Leverage previous imaging and medical data to gain a comprehensive understanding of the patient's condition for accurate diagnosis.
  • Complete studies efficiently.
  • Document observations and measurements during the study using the cardiology PACS for final review by the interpreting physician.
  • Ensure that studies are archived within the cardiology PACS network and collaborate with leadership to address technical issues.
  • Maintain and ensure the functionality of ultrasound equipment and accessories, working with leadership to resolve any technical problems.
  • Contribute to maintaining records for research purposes.
  • Assist in training echocardiography learners.
  • Engage in regular quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications

A combination of education and experience that would likely provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with any required licenses or certifications, is acceptable.

Education: Successful completion of an accredited cardiac ultrasound program; a Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience in congenital cardiac sonography, with progressively responsible roles.

Licensure/Certification: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Pediatric Echocardiography (PE), and Fetal Echocardiography (FE) credentials from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

OR

Registered Congenital Cardiovascular Sonographer (RCCS) credential from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), along with Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS) and Fetal Echocardiography (FE) credentials from ARDMS.

  • Proficiency in ultrasound diagnostic procedures and instrumentation.

Compensation is determined based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary may also be influenced by education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as well as internal equity and market alignment.

Typically, new hires start at the minimum to mid-range salary.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $155,875.20 to $176,737.60
