Position Overview

This section outlines the primary responsibilities and objectives of the role.

As a Cardiac Ultrasound Specialist, you will operate under the guidance of the echocardiography department's leadership. Your primary responsibility will be to conduct and acquire high-quality cardiac ultrasound examinations for patients with structurally normal hearts. You will also assist in more intricate congenital cardiac assessments while advancing your understanding of complex cardiac anatomy and physiology. Your role will involve demonstrating proficiency in normal cardiac structure and function, while progressively gaining knowledge in congenital heart defects and related cardiac conditions. Collaboration with department leadership will be essential to ensure the imaging meets clinical needs. You will perform diagnostic cardiac ultrasound studies on patients of all ages across various clinical settings, assisting in the collection of essential medical data to aid in accurate diagnoses. Critical thinking, sound judgment, and technical skill will be vital in this position. You will also ensure the functionality of ultrasound equipment and participate in outreach initiatives and on-call duties as needed. Documentation of procedures and maintenance of accurate records will be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review patient indications and relevant medical history prior to conducting echocardiograms.
  • Perform and acquire cardiac ultrasound studies, assisting with complex congenital assessments as required.
  • Implement infection control protocols during procedures.
  • Identify patients according to established policies, providing clear explanations of the examination process to ensure a comfortable environment.
  • Utilize ultrasound technology to capture diagnostic images, adhering to established imaging protocols.
  • Discuss echocardiographic findings with physicians and obtain additional images as necessary.
  • Conduct quantitative evaluations of echocardiographic data in line with imaging standards.
  • Assist in gathering relevant medical data to support clinical diagnoses.
  • Complete studies efficiently and document findings accurately in the cardiology PACS system.
  • Ensure proper archiving of studies within the PACS network and report any technical issues to leadership.
  • Support leadership in maintaining ultrasound equipment and accessories.
  • Participate in regular quality improvement meetings.
Qualifications

Education and experience that equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge for this role.

Education: Completion of an accredited cardiac ultrasound program is required; a bachelor's degree is preferred.

Experience: No prior experience is necessary.

Licensure/Certification: Candidates must possess either the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) credential from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or the Registered Congenital Cardiovascular Sonographer (RCCS) credential from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

  • Proficiency in ultrasound diagnostic techniques and equipment.
