General Overview:


This role involves supporting the design, development, and execution of environmental education initiatives at the Evanston Ecology Center.

Programs may encompass special events, educational field trips, scout activities, canoe excursions, summer camps, mini-camps, and programming for both youth and adults, along with other environmental education offerings.

Additional responsibilities include assisting with animal care, exhibit maintenance, garden upkeep, office organization, and providing customer assistance as required.


Supervision:
Reports to the Division Manager and Program Coordinators.

Key Responsibilities:
Leads, designs, organizes, and instructs participants in various activities.

Classes are conducted at multiple Ecology Center locations as well as in various parks, natural settings, community centers, and educational institutions.

Develop and prepare instructional materials and lesson plans aimed at enhancing participants' understanding of the environment and natural world.

Manage pre and post class/camp logistics, including attendance tracking and the setup and breakdown of equipment.
Suggest future course offerings and necessary supply purchases.
Provide animal care, including feeding, cleaning, and recommending supplies and food for procurement as needed.

Assist in the development and execution of the Farmette and related programs; responsibilities include maintaining, weeding, watering, ordering supplies, planting, and collaborating with the Program Coordinator on garden education initiatives.

Attend staff meetings as required.
Canoeing experience is preferred.
Promote and exemplify safe work practices in accordance with established safety guidelines.
Complete necessary documentation for accidents and incidents.
Maintain CPR and AED certification.
Ensure adherence to organizational policies, procedures, and strategic plans.
Represent the Ecology Center positively and ethically to patrons, guests, and staff.
Foster effective internal and external communication, both oral and written.
Be present at the work station, prepared for assigned duties at designated times.
Be available for overtime when requested.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Biology, environmental education, outdoor education, or a related field is preferred.
2-3 years of experience in developing and leading educational programs is preferred.
Canoeing experience is preferred.
Current CPR and AED certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
Valid driver's license is preferred.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills for both internal and external interactions.
Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

Compensation:
$17.05 per hour

Work Schedule:
Average of 18 hours per week. Program Instructor II's are expected to work 2-3 regular days per week and approximately 2 weekend days per month. Instructor shifts typically last 6-8 hours, with a required 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

Program Coordinators will request staff availability 2-3 months in advance (seasonally) and will establish seasonal schedules based on programming needs.

Instructors are also expected to participate in seasonal events as needed.
