Cafe Operations Student Leader

Reports to: Head of Area Operations

Status: Six months, Full-Time

Job Purpose: As the Cafe Operations Student Leader, you will acquire essential skills in managing a cafe, nurturing a team, becoming a community figure, and mastering business principles. You will benefit from the comprehensive support and resources of the Saxbys team while enjoying significant autonomy in the entrepreneurial journey of running this establishment.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Development: The Cafe Operations Student Leader is responsible for leading and cultivating a team of peers. Key duties include:
  • Identifying training needs and providing appropriate coaching and guidance to team members while offering regular feedback.
  • Managing cafe-level Human Resources tasks, including progressive discipline, payroll, and separations.
  • Collaborating with the Talent Development department to identify and nurture internal talent.
  • Partnering with the Recruiting team to discover new talent for the cafe.
  • Conducting monthly one-on-one meetings with team members to explore development opportunities.
  • Finding innovative ways to engage and retain team members.
  • Leading monthly team lead meetings and quarterly team gatherings to discuss strategic updates.
  • Communicating regularly through verbal and written means (weekly team emails and meetings) to ensure all team members are informed about the cafe's objectives.

Community Leadership: The Cafe Operations Student Leader serves as a servant leader, constantly seeking ways to engage guests through outstanding hospitality. Building a cafe that acts as a community cornerstone is a crucial learning objective:
  • Establishing and nurturing community relationships to ensure that the cafe is a vital part of the local area.
  • Planning and executing in-cafe events to promote community outreach and drive sales.
  • Collaborating with the Social Impact Manager to support Saxbys' mission of education and opportunity by utilizing the cafe for events and partnerships with local organizations.
  • Instilling and maintaining a culture of hospitality and servant leadership.
  • Utilizing public speaking skills to promote the Cafe Operations Student Leader role by addressing university classes and student organizations.
  • Creating locally-driven marketing strategies that engage the community.
  • Effectively supporting and implementing seasonal product launches.
  • Enhancing public relations skills through media training to communicate Saxbys' experiential learning program and culture.

Financial Management: The Cafe Operations Student Leader will learn to master the details that affect a business's Profit & Loss statement. Responsibilities include:
  • Applying best practices to enhance profitability.
  • Working with the Head of Area Operations to identify opportunities to meet and exceed sales targets while using operational tools to monitor costs.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to improve operational efficiency.
  • Monitoring and reporting on staffing levels to meet operational requirements while achieving labor goals.
  • Analyzing and managing Profit and Loss Statements through weekly financial reviews and reporting to executive and accounting teams on labor, inventory management, and sales.

Operational Support: The Cafe Operations Student Leader will support cafe operations by collaborating with baristas and team leads. Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the preparation and service of menu items.
  • Ensuring cleanliness standards are upheld in all service areas, guest seating, and restrooms.
  • Executing administrative tasks to support cafe operations:
    • Managing cash through daily deposits.
    • Monitoring product availability and waste through inventory counts.
    • Leading ordering and invoicing for products and supplies.
    • Creating weekly schedules to ensure appropriate staffing levels.
    • Ensuring the safety of the cafe, guests, and team members.
