Job Overview

Applied Business Communications (ABcom) is a prominent national contractor specializing in low voltage commercial structured cabling solutions. We are currently seeking a skilled Estimator to enhance our expanding workforce.

Position Objective: The Estimator/Project Engineer plays a vital role in supporting sales initiatives across commercial, data center, and other essential sectors. This position involves collaborating with the sales team on site assessments, design, engineering calculations, material takeoffs, and the formulation of proposals. The role also includes coordinating proposal processes, scheduling, and communication, as well as managing equipment procurement and product orders. The Estimator will provide technical expertise to fellow engineers, particularly in the use of Accubid estimating software, ensuring the delivery of exceptional results that set us apart from competitors.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the VP of Operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Stay informed about competitive landscape, market trends, building regulations, and industry benchmarks.
  • Uphold a professional image of ABcom in interactions with vendors, manufacturers, distributors, and clients.
  • Foster strong customer relationships to encourage repeat business and referrals.
  • Collaborate with sales and project management teams to generate precise bills of materials and cost estimates for both new constructions and retrofitting projects.
  • Develop and present proposals that withstand scrutiny, deliver value to clients, meet ABcom's gross profit standards, and facilitate sales closure.
  • Ensure smooth transitions to Operations for finalized sales projects.
  • Work closely with project managers to guarantee timely and high-quality project delivery.
  • Coordinate with Operations regarding anticipated product, equipment, and labor requirements.
  • Assist in resolving job-related challenges.
  • Adhere to and enforce all policies outlined in the ABcom Employee Handbook.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the VP of Operations.

Collaborative Relationships: The Estimator/Project Engineer will work alongside other engineers and maintain communication with Account Executives and Project Managers to ascertain bid and project specifications. A professional rapport with all clients is essential, as is close collaboration with the Sales Team to craft project proposals and pursue new business opportunities.

Work Environment:

  • ABcom provides a dynamic work atmosphere.
  • Work conditions may vary, including office settings and client locations. Travel and occasional evening or night work may be required. Reliable transportation and a clean driving record are necessary.

Physical and Mental Requirements: The role may involve physical tasks such as lifting, bending, and pulling on occasion.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Credentials: A Bachelor’s Degree in a technology-related field or a comparable combination of education and experience. A valid driver’s license and a well-maintained vehicle are required. Industry-recognized certifications, such as RCDD, are advantageous.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with BICSI installation and safety standards, as well as a solid understanding of information transport systems technologies. Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, and Accubid software, or similar tools, is essential.
  • Experience: A minimum of two years of experience in low-voltage structured cabling for end-users, developers, and general contractors.
  • Skills: A team-oriented, resourceful, and adaptable individual with a strong work ethic and problem-solving capabilities. Must possess effective communication skills and a detail-oriented approach.
