Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Coordinator is integral in fostering the development, execution, management, and sustainability of a comprehensive quality and safety framework across the organization. Collaborating with the Quality & Patient Safety team and various cross-functional groups, this role aims to enhance the safety culture, ultimately striving for improved reliability within a complex healthcare system.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads and manages all facets of project planning by facilitating multi-disciplinary quality and patient safety initiatives with increasing autonomy; oversees project management logistics, including timelines, agenda creation, documentation, presentation materials, and status reports for diverse audiences.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of patient safety principles, improvement models, and methodologies. Demonstrates advanced project management capabilities.
  • Conducts risk assessments and surveys across various departments and services.
  • Engages in activities utilizing incident reporting systems to identify trends and opportunities for enhancing patient safety, contributing to action plans aimed at mitigating risks.
  • Involved in the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs that promote a culture of safety within the organization.
  • Applies clinical expertise and knowledge of workflows when leading interdisciplinary teams focused on complex quality and safety improvements, ensuring alignment with national standards.
  • Ensures effective data management for assigned quality improvement initiatives, participates in the creation and implementation of data collection tools, and oversees data analysis and integrity.
  • Supports multidisciplinary teams in developing, implementing, and evaluating quality care initiatives tailored to specific patient demographics.
  • Mentors junior Quality & Patient Safety Associates.
  • Fosters positive, collaborative relationships with medical staff, nursing personnel, administration, and department management.
  • Provides educational support to a wide range of personnel on quality improvement and patient safety principles, including the culture of safety and high reliability concepts.
  • Acts as a database administrator as needed by department leadership.
  • Ensures compliance with relevant regulations and standards regarding patient care, including those set by state and federal agencies.
  • Participates actively in readiness preparations for accreditation surveys and other evaluations as directed by department leadership.
  • Maintains awareness of legislative and regulatory developments related to quality and patient safety.
  • Facilitates communication of quality and patient safety policies and procedures to all employees.
  • Assists clinical leaders in designing patient safety and risk management programs tailored to their specific areas.
  • Regularly reports on quality and patient safety issues and prepares documentation for departmental and committee reviews.
  • Utilizes the organization's cultural values as a basis for decision-making and to support its mission and objectives.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Quality & Patient Safety Manager or executive leadership.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's degree preferred. Clinical degree: RN. Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS) or Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-5 years of experience in healthcare administration, with a minimum of 1 year in clinical quality or patient safety roles.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated expertise in patient safety science and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with administrative and clinical leadership, staff, and healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to conduct interviews with individuals and groups from diverse professional backgrounds.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Proficient in organizing event information into coherent narratives.
  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to inspire trust and provide support and assistance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills, including the ability to address large audiences and create PowerPoint presentations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and capable of learning new software applications.
