Position Title: Linux System Administrator

Job Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a skilled Linux System Administrator to enhance our scientific computing capabilities. This role is crucial for the deployment, maintenance, and oversight of our advanced Linux-based systems that support cutting-edge research in various scientific fields.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the physical deployment of data center technologies.
  • Manage system administration tasks across numerous Linux servers.
  • Implement and maintain Ansible for configuration management, ensuring efficient operation of software and systems.
  • Establish and uphold security protocols while facilitating open scientific inquiry.
  • Respond promptly to system issues and emergencies to maintain 24x7 operational integrity.
  • Deploy and maintain core logging and monitoring systems to ensure optimal performance and health of the infrastructure.
  • Assist in the configuration and troubleshooting of network infrastructure.
  • Support experimental systems to ensure their effective operation and functionality.
  • Provide user support through established incident management platforms.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of administrative processes for clarity and accessibility.
  • Act as a primary contact for experimental groups, offering technical expertise and guidance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Physics, or a related discipline, along with 8 years of relevant experience in IT or systems administration.
  • Strong teamwork skills with excellent organizational and communication abilities.
  • Proficient in Linux system management and open-source software.
  • Experience with Bash and Python scripting.
  • Ability to manage and troubleshoot clustered environments.
  • Familiarity with distributed computing, high-performance systems, and networking principles.
  • Strong analytical skills for diagnosing complex issues.
  • Willingness to learn and implement best practices in system administration.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in system administration.
  • Familiarity with Foreman and Ansible integration.
  • Knowledge of LDAP database connections.
  • Experience in configuring network switches.
  • Proficiency in developing monitoring dashboards using Grafana.
  • Understanding of security best practices.

Work Environment:

  • Onsite work is required, with a commitment to safety and security standards.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (over 40 lbs) as needed.
  • Compliance with all applicable policies and procedures is expected.
