Position Overview:

The Forensic Science Institute (FSI) at the University of Central Oklahoma is committed to providing extensive training and research opportunities for students, professionals, and first responders in all facets of evidence collection, preservation, analysis, reporting, and expert testimony.

The Institute stands as a premier provider of forensic science education at both undergraduate and graduate levels through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program.

The Forensic Science program holds accreditation at the undergraduate level from the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) across all eligible disciplines, including Forensic Molecular Biology, Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Investigations, and Digital Forensics.

The Forensic Science Institute boasts a distinguished faculty comprised of international and national experts in their respective fields.

Currently, three positions are available: two newly established roles for the FSI's recently launched Doctor of Science program and one to fill a vacancy due to a promotion.

The responsibilities of the selected candidates will include teaching, advising, and mentoring students, assessing student performance, and maintaining departmental and student records in accordance with university policies.

Adherence to the educational philosophy of the university is essential. Collaboration with colleagues and professional peers is expected, along with participation in university meetings specifically related to faculty matters. Serving on departmental, college, and university committees as requested is also part of the role. Preparation of departmental reports as needed is required.

Engagement in teaching, service, and scholarly and/or creative activities is expected as outlined by the tenure and promotion policy in the UCO Employee and Faculty Handbook.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

The selected candidates will instruct undergraduate and graduate courses in forensic science pertinent to their area of expertise.

They will assist the Director of FSI in developing forensic science curricula for new courses in their specialization.

This curriculum will encompass instruction on the legal standards associated with evidence analysis in criminal cases and expert witness testimony regarding crime scene and/or analytical efforts in a courtroom environment.

Familiarity with standards and accrediting bodies within their respective disciplines, including the Daubert standards related to evidence admission in courtrooms, is necessary.

The selected candidates will design and coordinate field-training exercises for students, as well as law enforcement and public safety personnel in their area of expertise, and will develop and coordinate training curricula in their specialization.

They will also contribute to the development of in-service training, career training, and continuing education in forensic sciences.

Teaching, research, and service to the department/school and university are expected as defined by the tenure and promotion policy in the UCO Faculty Handbook.

The selected candidates will participate in undergraduate and graduate research activities, including mentoring graduate projects and theses, Oklahoma Research Day, NCUR, and seeking external funding opportunities.

They will serve on Institute, college, and university committees as requested.

Qualifications/Experience Required:

An earned doctoral degree in an appropriate forensic science or related discipline is preferred; however, ABD (all but dissertation) candidates will be considered, as well as candidates with a master's degree in a related field.

Qualifications / Experience Preferred:

Prior teaching and mentoring experience in a forensic science discipline at the college or university level is advantageous.

Experience in law enforcement or professional roles in practical forensic science applications, including but not limited to forensic lab experience, forensic investigations, and/or personnel management, is desirable.

Experience in providing expert and/or lay witness testimony in the candidate's field of expertise, along with a proven track record in interagency collaboration and professional networking, is beneficial.

Candidates should demonstrate potential for excellence across all levels of the FSI undergraduate and graduate curriculum in areas such as chemistry/toxicology, biology, impression evidence, digital forensics, crime scene processing, crime scene photography, blood stain pattern analysis, fingerprint analysis, forensic anthropology, artificial intelligence, statistics, and/or modeling.

The ideal candidate will have a history of academic research success, contributing to the body of scientific literature in their area of expertise, and will continue to do so at a level that garners national and international recognition.

Candidates should show potential for undergraduate and graduate level advising and mentoring and be open to accepting a dual appointment in another college or discipline.

Physical Demands:

Reasonable accommodations (in accordance with ADA requirements) may be made, upon request, to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
