Position Overview:

Beyond the Canvas is in search of an imaginative and engaging art specialist to lead our summer program, focusing on innovative and enjoyable artistic experiences for children. Candidates must be enthusiastic and confident in working with campers in grades 3-5 and should be available for a minimum of 3.5-4 hours on designated days.

Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Shift TBD)
Compensation: Starting at $16.50/hr

Role Responsibilities:

This role is integral to the YMCA's mission of enhancing community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Art Specialist will oversee a group of children in a seasonal day camp setting, designing and implementing specialized programs tailored to the interests and skills of each age group. Collaborating with fellow counselors, the specialist will ensure high-quality programming that fosters creativity, teamwork, and self-esteem among participants.

Key Duties:

  • Develop, organize, and facilitate a variety of age-appropriate activities that captivate children's interests.
  • Guide counselors in effectively teaching activities and encourage leadership within the team.
  • Lead specialty activities with support from counselors, ensuring focus and engagement.
  • Manage inventory of supplies for the specialty area and assist in procurement as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Camp Director to execute themes, special events, and general camp activities.
  • Welcome campers warmly and engage with them enthusiastically.
  • Build rapport with campers by learning their names and responding to their needs.
  • Promote youth development by setting a positive example and teaching problem-solving skills.
  • Ensure a rewarding experience for volunteers to enhance participation.
  • Foster positive relationships with families to understand their motivations for attending.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization within the camp environment.
  • Approach all responsibilities with enthusiasm and commitment.
  • Actively participate in all activities and assist as needed.
Safety Protocols:
  • Complete all required training sessions.
  • Adhere to safety standards and maintain accurate headcounts.
  • Implement risk management and emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Support group control and facilitate lunchtime activities.
  • Follow all YMCA, ACA, and NJ Licensing standards to ensure a safe and high-quality camp experience.
  • Report any immediate concerns to the Camp Director or supervisor.
  • Utilize positive reinforcement and redirection techniques for discipline.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a professional demeanor as a representative of the YMCA.
  • Wear the Camp T-shirt daily.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude, responsibility, and self-motivation; punctuality is essential.
  • Create a nurturing learning environment that promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or higher in Education, youth work, recreation, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in teaching, youth work, recreation, or a related area.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with children.
  • Capability to facilitate learning and supervise others effectively.
  • Understanding of age-specific characteristics and positive behavior management techniques.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications are required.
Physical Requirements:

The physical demands of this position require the ability to be on your feet for extended periods and actively supervise children in various environments.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, squat, and lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Must maintain visual and auditory awareness of all children in the program.
  • Clear communication skills are necessary to maintain group control.
