Senior Financial Accountant - Payroll Tax Management

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage G/L Journal Entries to guarantee prompt and precise reporting of Payroll information.
  • Conduct G/L Account Reconciliations (balance sheet/income statement) to confirm correct and accurate account activities.
  • Analyze Payroll G/L accounts; identify and address reconciling items and accounting discrepancies efficiently.
  • Oversee the reconciliation, payment, and submission of Payroll Tax withholdings, including Railroad Retirement (RRB) Taxes.
  • Verify and establish accurate RRB/Federal/State/Local Tax configurations of employee records based on W4 forms, work state, residence state, and Rail vs. Non-Rail status, including employee transfers and new hires.
  • Investigate tax-related issues utilizing various payroll publications and government resources, summarize findings, and communicate them to all management levels.
  • Assist in coordinating information requests for both internal and external audits.
  • Support year-end balancing and reconciliation to ensure accuracy in Payroll and W2 reporting.
  • Maintain monthly postings of creditable months for RRB reporting.
  • Execute weekly direct deposit and ACH bank transmissions, positive pay (check) files, and associated reconciliations.
  • Generate queries, manage downloads, and create detailed spreadsheets and reports for all management levels to facilitate Payroll information flow and resolve issues.
  • Conduct system testing and troubleshoot issues, implement new processes, and manage periodic vendor upgrades.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to Payroll union staff in task execution.
  • Deliver exceptional Customer Service to all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Complete projects as assigned by various management levels.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field, along with five (5) years of Payroll experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proficiency in (MS) Excel, spreadsheets, macros, Access databases, and other MS applications is essential.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong emphasis on accuracy.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Preferred:
  • Experience with Payroll HCM (Oracle) is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Payroll Journal Entries, Account Reconciliation, Payroll Tax, and Deduction regulations is beneficial.
  • A critical thinker and self-starter, with experience in RRB Tax and Discoverer or Orbit Report Writer is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
  • Occasional lifting of boxes weighing up to 30 pounds may be necessary.
