Position Overview

The Systems Engineering Division (SED) boasts extensive expertise in systems engineering, serving the U.S. government and various public and private entities, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and commercial enterprises involved in advanced space technology applications. Our work spans systems architecture development, system analysis and optimization, astrodynamics, orbital debris management, navigation, failure analysis, mission assurance, cost and schedule evaluation, and economic market analysis, leveraging a wide array of engineering and business disciplines to address a dynamic portfolio of programs and national challenges.

The Navigation and Positioning Systems Department (NPSD) is in search of a Senior Engineer in Navigation and Positioning Systems (Senior Engineer Specialist - Modeling & Simulation Engineering) to provide technical leadership in position, navigation, and timing (PNT) force design activities for key customers. This role necessitates experience in mission design, satellite navigation, rendezvous and proximity operations, cislunar domain, autonomous navigation, and space domain awareness. The ideal candidate will possess strategic vision and the capability to engage with clients, define PNT architecture strategies, and mentor junior staff. NPSD serves as a center of expertise in advancing PNT technologies for the national space enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical leadership in PNT to steer complex project outcomes through innovation and expertise, aligning with National Security Strategy (NSS) and Civil/Commercial programs.
  • Provide mentorship to early-career staff and client personnel.
  • Advise stakeholders and government clients by leading navigation and space enterprise modeling, simulation, and analysis efforts, focusing on GNSS constellation management, precision/autonomous navigation systems, advanced space system navigation, PNT technologies, and enhancing resilience in key mission areas.
  • Conduct and lead technical assessments, trade studies, and in-depth analyses in collaboration with multidisciplinary technical leaders, Aerospace Program Office personnel, and external clients, including defense and civil agencies.
  • Develop and present timely, technically accurate briefings and reports that effectively communicate analysis results and propose solutions, supporting critical decision-making in collaboration with technical leads and management.
  • Guide the development and enhancement of analysis software tools, implementing best practices and modernizing analytical software.

Qualifications for Success as a Senior Engineer Specialist - Modeling & Simulation Engineering

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
  • 12 years of relevant professional experience in technical roles.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: modeling, simulation, and analysis, including orbit determination, orbit propagation, state estimation, orbit management systems, maneuver reconstruction, mission data processing, signal processing, space threats, resilient systems, advanced PNT technologies, algorithm design, software development, or mathematical modeling.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs and activities simultaneously, serving as a technical point of contact.
  • Familiarity with programming languages/tools such as C, C++, Python, Fortran, MATLAB, or Java is advantageous.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities within technical teams.
  • Willingness to travel domestically as required.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be beneficial if you possess:

  • Ability to cultivate effective working relationships with clients, contractors, and colleagues.
  • Advanced degree or professional experience in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in satellite navigation topics, including covariance analysis, satellite operations, relative navigation, rendezvous and proximity operations, formation flight, or space situational awareness.
  • Experience in applied mathematical fields such as optimization, statistical estimation, and numerical analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in spacecraft or launch operations.
  • Current SSBI with an active TS/SCI clearance.
  • Current SAP access.
