Position Overview
The Systems Engineering Division (SED) possesses extensive expertise in systems engineering, serving the U.S. government and various public and private entities, universities, nonprofit organizations, consortia, and commercial firms engaged in the advanced application of space technology. From systems architecture development to system analysis and optimization, astrodynamics, orbital debris management, navigation, failure analysis, mission assurance, cost and schedule assessment, and economic market analysis, SED leverages a wide array of engineering and business disciplines to address a diverse and dynamic portfolio of programs and national challenges.
The Navigation and Positioning Systems Department (NPSD) is on the lookout for a Senior Engineer in Navigation and Positioning Systems (Senior Engineer Specialist - Modeling & Simulation Engineering) to offer technical guidance in position, navigation, and timing (PNT) force design initiatives for various customers. This role necessitates experience in mission design, satellite navigation, rendezvous and proximity operations, cislunar domain navigation, autonomous navigation, and space domain awareness. The ideal candidate will possess strategic foresight and the capability to engage with clients, formulate strategies for PNT architectures, and mentor junior personnel. NPSD serves as a center of expertise in the development and enhancement of PNT technologies for the national space sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver technical leadership in PNT to steer intricate project or portfolio outcomes through innovation and expertise in alignment with National Security Strategy (NSS) and Civil/Commercial programs.
- Provide technical mentorship to early-career staff and client personnel.
- Advise key stakeholders and government clients by spearheading a range of navigation and space enterprise modeling, simulation, and analysis efforts, focusing on GNSS constellation management, precision/autonomous navigation systems, advanced space system navigation, PNT technologies, and enhancing the resilience of critical mission areas within the space enterprise architecture.
- Conduct and lead technical deep dives, trade studies, and assessments in collaboration with multi-disciplinary technical leaders, Aerospace Program Office personnel, and external clients, including defense and civil agencies.
- Develop and present timely and technically accurate briefings and reports that effectively communicate analysis results and provide recommended solutions, aiding critical decision-making in partnership with technical leads, management, and clients.
- Guide the development and maturation of analysis software tools, implementing best practices and modernizing analysis software tools.
Qualifications for Success as a Senior Engineer Specialist - Modeling & Simulation Engineering
Minimum Requirements:
- Master's degree from an accredited institution in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
- 12 years of relevant professional experience in a technical capacity.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: modeling, simulation, and analysis subjects including orbit determination, orbit propagation, state estimation, orbit management systems, maneuver reconstruction, mission data processing, signal processing, space threats, resilient systems, advanced PNT technologies, algorithm design, software development, or mathematical modeling.
- Ability to manage multiple programs and/or activities concurrently, serving as a technical point of contact.
- Familiarity with one or more programming languages/tools such as C, C++, Python, Fortran, MATLAB, or Java is advantageous.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams effectively.
- Willingness to travel domestically to client and contractor facilities.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance issued by the U.S. government, necessitating U.S. citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
It would be beneficial if you possess:
- Ability to cultivate effective working relationships with clients, contractors, and other personnel.
- Advanced degree and/or research or professional experience in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, or a related field.
- Experience in satellite navigation topics, including covariance analysis, satellite operations, relative navigation, rendezvous and proximity operations, formation flight, or space situational awareness.
- Experience in applied mathematical topics such as optimization, statistical estimation, and numerical analysis.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, collaborative, written, and oral communication skills.
- Experience in spacecraft or launch operations.
- Current SSBI with an active TS/SCI clearance.
- Current SAP access.
