Job Responsibilities

As a key contributor to the public safety initiative, you will oversee and guide a dedicated team tasked with conducting thorough investigations, executing search and arrest warrants, and apprehending individuals who have absconded. Your leadership will enhance community safety through the application of Evidence-Based Practices in the training and supervision of personnel. You will be responsible for supervising and monitoring probationers assigned by the Courts and the Parole Board, ensuring compliance with Department of Corrections (DOC) standards. This role emphasizes public safety through diligent supervision, follow-up, and the utilization of community resources, including necessary commitments or re-commitments.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates must possess the ability to qualify and carry a firearm for specific assignments. A solid understanding of federal, state, and local laws governing probation and parole is essential. Familiarity with the Virginia Department of Corrections Community Corrections practices, policies, and procedures is required. Knowledge of the criminal justice system and effective treatment approaches is critical. The ability to interpret and communicate the policies, procedures, and standards of the Department of Corrections is necessary. Competency in Evidence-Based Practices to direct district resources toward interventions that yield positive, measurable outcomes is expected. Strong leadership skills, the ability to inspire pro-social change, and the capacity to motivate staff to perform at their best are essential. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is necessary.

Additional Considerations

Progressive experience in Community Corrections is preferred. Experience in supervising both professional and support staff is advantageous. Relevant coursework in criminal justice or a related human services field, or equivalent experience or training, is beneficial. Experience in program development, implementation, and evaluation of social services related to probation within a state judicial system is a plus. Familiarity with planning, budgeting, analysis, and administration is desirable. Current or former certification from the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is preferred.
