Healthcare Support Specialist

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Hospital Attendants play a crucial role in maintaining a clean and safe environment for patient care. These professionals are responsible for performing essential custodial duties in various areas of the hospital, including the operating room, ensuring that all spaces are ready for patient treatment and surgical procedures. Qualified candidates should possess strong interpersonal skills, effective time management abilities, and a keen attention to detail, enabling them to collaborate effectively with all organizational levels.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely collects and disposes of hazardous materials found on floors, furniture, and equipment, ensuring proper disposal in designated containers.
- Efficiently removes waste from the operating room to maintain a hygienic environment.
- Properly handles suction canisters, including Neptune devices, in accordance with established protocols.
- Cleans and sanitizes floors and equipment as required, including operating room beds, surgical lights, walls, and other surfaces.
- Changes bed linens and prepares areas for subsequent use.
- May assist in setting up equipment in designated locations.
- Complies with all Infection Control and regulatory agency standards.
- Conducts thorough cleaning of surgical suites and perioperative areas.
- Performs additional related tasks as assigned.
Required: Proficiency in English and the capability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
Preferred: Previous experience in a healthcare setting or the hospital industry. Candidates should demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, time management, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across various levels of the organization.

Stony Brook Medicine maintains a smoke-free environment, prohibiting smoking on campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas. All hospital positions may be subject to changes in assigned days and shifts as necessary. This role may require the use of respiratory protection, which could restrict the wearing of facial hair. Additionally, this position may be designated as 'essential,' meaning employees may be required to remain on-site during institutional emergencies.
Pre-employment Requirements:
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and medical clearance from Employee Health Services.
- Completion of an electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references.
- Passing a 4-panel drug screening.
- Meeting all regulatory requirements for pre-employment screenings.
- Providing any necessary New York State licenses or certifications.
