Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full-time work/research experience in Chemistry or a related discipline. Must be capable of transporting laboratory supplies, including the setup and dismantling of equipment weighing up to 50lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Chemistry or a related discipline. Experience in developing experimental setups based on brief descriptions of experimental requirements. Familiarity with instrumentation in related laboratories, particularly in advanced courses such as organic and physical chemistry. Administrative experience in laboratory support. Experience in a related laboratory within a Higher Education context.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Laboratory Instructional Support Specialist is responsible for providing technical support services for the Organic and/or General Chemistry instructional laboratories and other laboratory courses as necessary. Over 1,000 undergraduate students enroll in introductory, organic, and physical laboratory courses each semester. The effectiveness of our educational program heavily relies on the staff member's ability to collaborate with faculty to prepare and assess experiments, ensuring a laboratory environment equipped with functional instrumentation, accurately standardized reagents, and sufficient supplies for scheduled experiments. Evening hours may be required, and the Laboratory Instructional Support Specialist must be adaptable with their schedule.
  • Assist faculty in the creation of new laboratory experiments, including the technical design, trial execution of laboratory exercises, and preparation of materials for instructional purposes. Analyze, design, and draw conclusions regarding the performance and feasibility of experiments in a timely manner to allow for modifications before directing the preparation of replicas.
  • Support active laboratory sessions and manage course preparation/stockroom. Assist in the administrative functions associated with large multi-section courses:
    • Budget preparation, including experimental cost analysis.
    • Assist in student registration and check-in processes.
    • Maintain responsibility for hiring student assistants to work directly with the candidate.
    • Engage constructively and proactively with course instructors.
    • Promote and enforce a rigorous safety culture.
    • Maintain accurate records of class attendance and breakage.
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, repair, and modify instrumentation used in the organic, introductory, and physical undergraduate laboratories. Repairs may involve mechanical, optical, electrical, or electronic aspects and may require collaboration with departmental workshops or manufacturers. Adapt apparatus to meet educational needs.
  • Select supplies, chemicals, reagents, glassware, apparatus, and instruments based on safety, quality, quantity, reliability of manufacturer, cost, and budget considerations, necessitating knowledge of pedagogical objectives and both routine and non-routine laboratory techniques.
  • Prepare and standardize solutions, reagents, and setups required for laboratory experiments. Organize the collection of hazardous waste generated during experiments, ensuring awareness of laboratory safety requirements and practices.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned, relevant to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for overtime provisions of the FLSA.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for additional annual location pay.
