Position Overview:

Under the guidance of the Lead Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner (APP), the Cardiac Surgery APP will undertake essential clinical responsibilities, including patient assessment and management in preoperative, postoperative, and outpatient contexts. This role also involves performing bedside procedures in the ICU, such as arterial line and central line insertions, endovascular vein harvesting, and assisting in cardiac surgical operations (e.g., CABG, valve surgery, aorta surgery).

  1. Collaborate effectively with clinical teams to manage cardiac surgery patients across various settings, including pre-operative, peri-operative, post-operative, and outpatient care.
  2. Gather relevant data concerning the patient's health status, including interpreting diagnostic tests and procedures, and perform minor surgical tasks (e.g., vein harvesting).
  3. Develop treatment plans for cardiac conditions within the scope of practice, implementing therapeutic interventions as appropriate. Exercise judgment on issues requiring consultation or referral to the supervising cardiac surgeon or other healthcare professionals.
  4. Analyze clinical findings, distinguishing between normal and abnormal variations to formulate accurate diagnoses.
  5. Identify assessment strategies, diagnostic approaches, and therapeutic interventions that reflect current evidence, including data, research, literature, and expert clinical knowledge; collaborate with physicians on the care plan as necessary.
  6. Provide direct care to patients and assist in managing complex cases, fostering patient engagement by clearly explaining treatment plans and addressing potential obstacles.
  7. Engage in quality and patient satisfaction review processes, integrating feedback into improvement strategies and quality forums. Utilize quality data to enhance care delivery effectiveness.
  8. Stay informed on current healthcare research findings and other evidence to expand clinical knowledge and improve role performance.
  9. Participate in group call responsibilities, including night and weekend coverage.

Educational and Experience Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program or an accredited nursing program as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant clinical experience in Cardiac Surgery.

Licensure and Certifications Required:

  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
