Hourly Rate: $21.89
Work Locations: Edison Johnson Aquatic Center and Campus Hills Pool at I. R. Holmes Recreation Center

Work Schedule: Shifts vary from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday, and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the lifeguard team and monitor all activities within the aquatic area.
  • Assist the supervisor and take charge in their absence, especially during opening and closing hours, including handling cash deposits and financial documentation.
  • Act as the lead staff member on-site, guiding lifeguard personnel, facilitating group training, and evaluating staff performance.
  • Design and conduct swim lessons for varying skill levels, providing constructive feedback to participants and their guardians.
  • Assist in maintaining proper chemical balance and air quality in the pool area, along with managing chemical supplies and records.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the pool deck, restrooms, and showers, replenishing supplies as necessary.
  • Monitor the pool area, determining when to intervene and issuing warnings for rule violations or unsafe actions.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections and assess equipment condition.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing patron inquiries and managing escalated situations in the supervisor's absence.
  • Assist at the front desk as needed, entering patron data, program registrations, and fee payments into the recreation software system, including cash handling during opening and closing procedures.
  • Respond to emergencies, offering appropriate guidance to patrons and administering first aid when required.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Familiarity with American Red Cross Lifeguard standards and regulations.
  • Understanding of swimming pool filtration and operation.
  • Proficient in supervising staff and delegating tasks effectively.
  • Ability to communicate rules and regulations clearly to individuals and groups.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and influencing behavior.
  • Strong leadership and public relations skills.
  • Effective report writing and record-keeping abilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC).
  • At least one year of direct aquatics experience.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification and either Water Safety Instructor or Lifeguarding Instructor certification, or equivalent certifications recognized by a national agency valid at all pool facilities.
