Job Summary

The Financial Counselor is a key member of our team, responsible for ensuring that patients receive high-quality financial services. This role involves performing financial clearance functions, including verifying insurance eligibility and benefits, ensuring authorizations, and providing price estimates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with facility leadership to ensure all patients are financially cleared and screened.
  • Conduct patient interviews to obtain demographic and financial data for registration, insurance verification, pre-certification, and billing.
  • Record accurate patient demographic information when reviewing previous accounts and accounts with future dates of service.
  • Follow and act on several complex system policies, including financial assistance, limited plan, point of service, out-of-network, and more.
  • Obtain and screen guarantor financial information for financial assistance and refer patients to appropriate resources for public assistance programs.
  • Provide estimates of procedures and services, calculate payment requirements, and negotiate pre-service payments according to financial clearance requirements.
  • Establish payment arrangements for future and previous services.
  • Review future schedules to ensure pre-authorization and pre-payments have been collected.
  • Assist with contacting physician offices and patients to ensure pre-authorization and referral requirements are met prior to the date of service.
  • Review and interpret explanation of benefits received from payers to assist patients and guarantors with understanding of claims processing or denial of services by payer.

Requirements

  • 3 years of healthcare experience or education equivalency required.
  • Proven ability to problem-solve and perform critical thinking.
  • Requires good listening, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as professional, pleasant, and respectful telephone etiquette.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a highly stressful and emotional environment, including dealing with traumatic events and life-or-death situations.
  • Must be able to exhibit a high level of empathy and effectively communicate with patients and family members.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage multiple, changing priorities in an effective and organized manner.
  • Excellent data entry, numeric, typing, and computer navigational skills.
  • Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office and Excel.
