Position Overview:

This role involves supporting the execution of the statewide forest health initiative. The technician will be tasked with assessing land areas to enhance ecological well-being and mitigate fire hazards, performing evaluations of forest health, gathering and managing ecological data, and aiding in the creation of forest health materials. Additionally, the technician will assess forest conditions and monitor for damage, decline, or mortality resulting from pests, diseases, and invasive species. Responsibilities include tracking forest health initiatives and documenting treatment effectiveness, marking trees and boundaries, and assisting with the planning of forestry projects and grant management. The technician will also contribute to the agency's efforts in conducting annual aerial surveys for pests and pathogens affecting forests by participating in flight assessments, data collection, and report preparation. This position requires travel across the state and may involve occasional overnight stays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments of forest health; gather and manage ecological data; monitor for pest damage, diseases, and invasive species.
  • Oversee forestry projects through site evaluations and collaboration with sub-grantees, including assistance with grant management.
  • Provide technical support regarding forestry practices, forest health, and the impacts of pests and diseases.
  • Deliver customer service to colleagues, grantees, and stakeholders; maintain communication with supervisors and peers regarding tasks and projects.
  • Maintain vehicles, equipment, and work environments.
  • Drive for state-related business.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Fundamental principles of forest ecology, ideally acquired through formal education or experience in the forestry sector.
  • Basic techniques and challenges in forest resource management.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, GIS, and related software.
  • Understanding of environmental and cultural regulations.

Skills in:

  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Active listening for enhanced communication.
  • Public speaking abilities.
  • Identification skills for plants, insects, and forest pathogens.
  • Data collection and analysis, along with ecological monitoring.
  • Proficiency in using forestry field instruments and software.
  • Mapping, remote sensing, and GIS capabilities.

Ability to:

  • Navigate rugged and uneven terrain.
  • Engage in creative and critical thinking.
  • Read and write proficiently.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.
  • Fly in small aircraft for extended periods.
  • Visually distinguish between live and dead trees during aerial surveys.
  • Travel statewide with occasional overnight stays.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry or a related natural resource field, or equivalent professional experience. Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and compliance processes is advantageous.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

A valid driver's license is required. All employees operating a vehicle for state business must possess a current, valid driver's license and complete necessary training and checks. Compliance with the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify) is mandatory for all newly hired state employees.
