Position Overview:

The Wildlife Resource Management Supervisor is responsible for directing the wildlife resources initiatives within the Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM). This role involves facilitating forestry operations such as timber sales, harvests, stewardship projects, and hazardous vegetation management by ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The supervisor may lead a team of staff and contractors, conduct wildlife surveys, and evaluate survey documentation. This position also interprets relevant policies and suggests strategies to ensure adherence to wildlife legislation.

This role may provide the opportunity for remote work within Arizona, depending on departmental needs and the consistent achievement of performance expectations.

Many employees across various agencies participate in the State's Remote Work Program, allowing them to work from home, office spaces, or hoteling environments. All work, including remote tasks, must be conducted within Arizona.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage staff and contractors.
  • Oversee budgets, timelines, and project execution to ensure timely completion of objectives.
  • Report on project activities and accomplishments.
  • Review natural resource management strategies to confirm compliance with local, state, tribal, and federal regulations.
  • Provide informed recommendations for avoidance, minimization, and mitigation actions.
  • Conduct site assessments and manage field surveys, coordinating with service providers such as biologists and soil experts.
  • Review findings from wildlife resource assessments and maintain compliance documentation.
  • Engage with other governmental entities, representing DFFM on wildlife management matters.
  • Monitor wildlife legislation and interpret relevant policies.
  • Facilitate training and educational resources for colleagues and project partners to promote awareness of wildlife resources.
  • Participate in meetings to enhance program delivery and collaborate with industry stakeholders.
  • Travel for state business as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Federal and state wildlife regulations pertinent to forestry operations, including the Endangered Species Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
  • Consultation processes related to the Endangered Species Act.
  • Development of Habitat Conservation Plans.
  • Permitting processes and due diligence in wildlife management.
  • Management and supervisory practices.

Skills in:

  • Effective communication of policies and regulatory responsibilities.
  • Organizing information and documentation.
  • Coordinating plans and personnel.
  • Building and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Conducting research and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

A graduate degree in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related field is preferred, along with five years of relevant professional experience. Certification as a Wildlife Biologist is also preferred.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

A valid Arizona Driver's License is required. Employees operating a vehicle for state business must maintain a current, valid driver's license and complete all necessary training and checks. All newly hired state employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
