Position Overview:

The Wildlife Resource Management Supervisor is responsible for directing the wildlife resources initiatives within the Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM). This role facilitates forestry operations, including timber procurement and harvesting, stewardship initiatives, and the management of hazardous vegetation removal projects through diligent regulatory oversight. The supervisor may lead a team of staff and contractors, conducting surveys and evaluating survey documentation. This position also involves interpreting regulations and advising on strategies to ensure compliance with wildlife legislation.

This role may provide the opportunity for remote work within Arizona, contingent upon the department's operational requirements and the consistent achievement of performance standards.

The State of Arizona promotes a work environment that emphasizes flexibility, independence, and trust. Many employees across various state agencies engage in the State's Remote Work Program, allowing them to work from home, state offices, or designated hoteling spaces. All work, including remote tasks, must be conducted within Arizona.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage staff and contractors.
  • Oversee budgets, timelines, and project execution to ensure timely completion of objectives and goals.
  • Report on project activities and accomplishments.
  • Review natural resource management strategies to confirm compliance with local, state, tribal, and federal regulations.
  • Provide informed recommendations for avoidance, minimization, and mitigation actions.
  • Ensure the lawful and efficient execution of forestry initiatives.
  • Conduct site assessments and perform audits and inspections, managing field surveys.
  • Coordinate with service providers (biologists, soil and water specialists, etc.) for wildlife resource evaluations.
  • Analyze survey results and documentation.
  • Maintain records to demonstrate regulatory compliance.
  • Engage with other governmental entities, representing DFFM on wildlife resource management matters.
  • Monitor wildlife resource legislation and interpret relevant policies.
  • Provide training and educational resources to colleagues and project partners to foster awareness and appreciation of wildlife resources.
  • Participate in meetings to enhance program delivery and collaborate with industry stakeholders.
  • Travel for state business as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Federal and state wildlife regulations pertinent to forestry operations, including the Endangered Species Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
  • Consultation processes related to the Endangered Species Act.
  • Development of Habitat Conservation Plans.
  • Permitting processes and due diligence in wildlife management.
  • Management and supervisory practices.

Skills in:

Preferred Qualifications:

A graduate degree in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline is preferred. A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience is also preferred. Certification as a Wildlife Biologist is advantageous.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

A valid Arizona Driver's License is required. Employees operating a vehicle for state business must maintain a current, valid driver's license and complete all necessary training and checks. All newly hired state employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
