The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) of Maryland, established in 1939, is recognized as the first statewide medical examiner system in the nation. The OCME is committed to fostering a collaborative and professional environment, upholding a high standard of excellence in forensic pathology. Our team consists of experienced forensic pathologists, including the Chief Medical Examiner and Deputy Chief Medical Examiners, supported by a dedicated group of Assistant Medical Examiners.

Primary Responsibilities

The Maryland Department of Health is looking for qualified Assistant Medical Examiners to join our team of forensic pathologists. The primary function of this position is to conduct investigations into deaths and perform autopsies as required. Key responsibilities include:
  • Assessing information from death scenes;
  • Conducting autopsies and compiling detailed reports;
  • Reviewing medical records and relevant reports to accurately ascertain the cause and manner of death;
  • Responding to inquiries from family members and other stakeholders regarding death investigations;
  • Overseeing the work of autopsy technicians;
  • Participating in departmental meetings;
  • Collecting evidence during autopsy procedures for law enforcement;
  • Providing educational support to fellows, residents, and medical students;
  • Testifying in court and attending relevant meetings.
When on call, the incumbent must be prepared to consult with investigators and make decisions regarding the release of organs and tissues for transplantation.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must possess:
  • A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution;
  • Completion of an ACGME accredited Forensic Fellowship program;
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in Maryland (licensure must be obtained prior to employment);
  • Ability to achieve Board Certification in Forensic Pathology and Anatomic Pathology within the designated eligibility period;
  • Availability for on-call duties two to three times monthly and one weekend per month.

  • Experience with specialized autopsy techniques;
  • Proficiency in using microscopes and interpreting histological findings;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to complete reports promptly;
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with various stakeholders;
  • Ability to adhere to established procedures while making independent decisions;
  • Capability to thrive in fast-paced environments.
Licenses and Certifications

Candidates must hold a valid license from the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine in Maryland at the time of hire.
