Position Overview

The State of Maryland is offering an exciting opportunity for newly appointed Medical Examiners, with a recruitment bonus of $25,000 available after a satisfactory six-month performance period.

As a pioneer in the field since 1939, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) of Maryland is renowned for its supportive environment and dedication to excellence. Our accredited forensic pathology team consists of experienced professionals, including the Chief Medical Examiner and Deputy Chief Medical Examiners, alongside a dedicated group of Assistant Medical Examiners.

Key Responsibilities

The Maryland Department of Health is in search of Assistant Medical Examiners to enhance our professional team. The primary role involves conducting thorough investigations into deaths and performing autopsies as required. Responsibilities include:
  • Assessing information from death scenes;
  • Conducting autopsies and generating detailed reports;
  • Reviewing medical and police records to accurately ascertain the cause and manner of death;
  • Responding to inquiries from families and other stakeholders regarding death investigations;
  • Overseeing the activities of autopsy technicians;
  • Participating in departmental meetings;
  • Collecting evidence during autopsy procedures for law enforcement;
  • Providing educational support to fellows, residents, and medical students;
  • Testifying in court and attending relevant meetings.
As part of the on-call responsibilities, the incumbent will be expected to consult with investigators and make decisions regarding the release of organs and tissues for transplantation.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:
  • A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution;
  • Completion of an ACGME accredited Forensic Fellowship program;
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in Maryland (licensure must be obtained prior to employment);
  • Capability to achieve Board Certification in Forensic Pathology and Anatomic Pathology within the designated eligibility period;
  • Availability for on-call duties two to three times monthly and one weekend per month.

  • Experience with specialized autopsy techniques;
  • Proficiency in microscopy and histology interpretation;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to complete reports promptly;
  • Excellent communication skills for interactions with various stakeholders;
  • Capacity to adhere to established procedures while exercising independent judgment;
  • Ability to thrive in high-pressure environments.
Licensure Requirements
Applicants must hold a valid license from the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine at the time of hire.
