Position Overview

The State of Maryland is offering a unique opportunity for individuals to join the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as Assistant Medical Examiners. This role is integral to our forensic pathology team, which is dedicated to investigating causes and manners of death through thorough examinations and autopsies.

Key Responsibilities

As an Assistant Medical Examiner, your primary responsibilities will include:
  • Assessing information from death scenes to gather relevant data;
  • Conducting autopsies and compiling detailed reports on findings;
  • Reviewing medical documentation, police reports, and toxicology results to accurately ascertain the cause and manner of death;
  • Responding to inquiries from family members and other interested parties regarding death investigations;
  • Overseeing the activities of assigned autopsy technicians;
  • Participating in daily departmental discussions and meetings;
  • Collecting evidence for law enforcement during autopsy procedures;
  • Providing educational guidance to fellows, visiting residents, and medical students;
  • Testifying in court and attending relevant meetings.

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
  • Graduation from an accredited medical school with an MD or DO degree;
  • Completion of an ACGME accredited Forensic Fellowship program;
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in Maryland, which must be obtained prior to employment;
  • Ability to achieve Board Certification in Forensic Pathology and Anatomic Pathology within the designated eligibility period;
  • Willingness to be on call for 24-hour periods two to three times monthly and to work one weekend each month.

Preferred Skills

Ideal candidates will possess:
  • Experience with specialized autopsy techniques;
  • Proficiency in using microscopes and interpreting histological findings;
  • Strong organizational skills to ensure timely completion of case reports;
  • Excellent communication abilities for effective interaction with various stakeholders;
  • Capability to adhere to standardized procedures while making independent decisions;
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments.

Licensure Requirements

Applicants must hold a valid license from the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine in the state at the time of hire.
