Position: Behavior Specialist

Salary: $60,000

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Behavior Specialist is responsible for overseeing clinical practices, providing technical guidance, and enhancing skill development among program staff in the realm of behavior support services. This role involves collaboration with staff, program supervisors, families, and other support providers to deliver effective behavioral services to individuals across various programs, including residential and day services. Flexibility in scheduling is essential to accommodate the agency's needs, which may include weekend work. The Behavior Specialist is also expected to be available for emergency calls after hours when necessary and will supervise the Behavior Therapy Technician regarding behavioral responsibilities.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education:

Master's Degree in Special Education, Psychology, or a related field in Human Services.

Minimum Experience:

  • 5 years of relevant experience working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities, including the creation, implementation, and monitoring of behavior support plans.
  • Experience in conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and developing behavior support plans for individuals diagnosed with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) and Autism. Familiarity with regulatory compliance in designing residential behavior plans is required.
  • One year of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Experience in training and coaching staff in residential and/or day programs on the application of general strategies and individualized programs using principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Special Education techniques.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSAs):

  • Understanding of the principles and procedures of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA).
  • Familiarity with Positive Behavior Support principles is preferable.
  • Knowledge of behavior management principles and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs).

Required Certification/Registration: FBA certified or to be obtained within the first month of employment. Certification as or pursuing BCaBA or BCBA is preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Designs, implements, and oversees behavioral support services across adult residential and/or day programs.
  • Conducts individual functional behavioral assessments and re-assessments, interpreting results to create ethical and effective interventions that foster skill development and functional behavior.
  • Develops and executes behavior support plans, behavior intervention plans, and program plans, including goals and ongoing services.
  • Continuously monitors individual progress, evaluating and adjusting interventions based on outcome reviews.
  • Provides training and direct supervision to staff as they implement behavior support and intervention plans, enabling individuals to develop skills in the least restrictive environment.
  • Ensures that all behavior support and intervention plans are reviewed with program teams semi-annually and as necessary.
  • Secures necessary written consents for behavior support plans involving restrictive interventions, presenting these at the agency-wide Human Rights Committee meetings.
  • Collaborates with other behavior specialists to utilize assessments and develop a unified, individualized plan that promotes a comprehensive approach and consistent support across a person's life in both day and residential programs.
  • Identifies, develops, and delivers training to staff at all levels in behavior management, positive behavior intervention supports, and applied behavior analysis.
  • Works with staff on environmental management and the design and implementation of program curricula within a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports framework.
  • Addresses challenging behavior as it arises, designing and implementing reactive strategies that comply with regulations while providing proactive strategies to address all types of behavior, emphasizing skill development that meets functional needs adaptively.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings as appropriate.
