Overview:
Under the direct guidance of healthcare providers, the individual will engage in patient evaluation and care while ensuring accurate documentation is maintained.

This role requires a foundational understanding of both specialty and primary care, with the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care effectively.

The position is accountable for coordinating care to guarantee that high-quality, compassionate healthcare is delivered.

Responsibilities include managing patient interactions at office locations and serving as a liaison with various departments and organizations.

The role may involve ordering medical, pharmacy, and office supplies necessary for patient care management.

Compliance with MyMichigan Health policies and procedures, as well as adherence to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations, is essential.

The individual will also coordinate training for new employees, students, and temporary staff as needed.

Patient education, assistance with specialty care procedures, emergency response, and monitoring care management for high-risk patients are key responsibilities. The role includes educating patients and families about medications, their purposes, and potential side effects, while ensuring continuity of care with other healthcare providers.

General office tasks such as typing, filing, and managing phone communications may also be required. The specific expectations for this position may vary based on the assigned practice, and the immediate supervisor will clarify responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:
(30%)* Manage incoming calls, schedule urgent/emergent appointments, and relay test results. Provide support and guidance to patients regarding consultations, testing, and insurance documentation.

(30%)* Welcome patients and their families, conduct routine pre-examination tasks including vital signs, and document both objective and subjective data regarding the patient's condition. Maintain accurate patient records through tasks such as orders reconciliation and secure messaging.

(20%)* Assist healthcare providers during examinations and procedures.

(20%)* Prepare and sanitize patient areas, set up medical equipment, and ensure cleanliness post-procedure. Dispose of contaminated materials and sterilize instruments.

Additional Duties:
Conduct comprehensive patient assessments as required within the scope of practice.

Perform patient care tasks such as administering injections, changing dressings, and collecting blood samples.

In certain practices, demonstrate proficiency in assisting with procedures like electrocardiograms (EKG), Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT), Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABI), and Non-stress Tests (NST).

Ensure a clean and safe environment for patients and colleagues. Travel to satellite clinics may be necessary.


Proficiently use necessary computer systems in the office environment, including MAPS, MCIR Practice Management, Electronic Medical Records, and other relevant software to support healthcare providers and staff.

Exhibit critical thinking skills in patient management.


Maintain confidentiality and uphold patient rights in accordance with HIPAA regulations.


May perform clerical tasks such as completing insurance forms, correspondence, arranging hospital admissions, answering phones, and updating patient medical records.

Order necessary supplies and medications.

Ensure accurate documentation and coding in medical records as per policy. Participate in annual quality reviews as required.


Address the age-specific needs of the patient population served, in alignment with departmental standards and policies, as evidenced by observation and feedback.

Undertake other related responsibilities as assigned.

Strong interpersonal skills are essential for effective communication with individuals and groups at all levels, conveying ideas and concepts clearly.

Annual Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training is mandatory as per the Exposure Control Plan.


Knowledge of medical office policies and procedures typically acquired through three to five years of experience in a healthcare setting is required.

Previous experience in a physician clinic environment is preferred.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death.

Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or suitable alternatives as required.


Must be able to navigate the facility independently and perform job functions as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing are necessary, with or without assistive devices.

Frequent sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods are required, along with potential postural changes such as stooping, kneeling, or crouching.

Some exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials is expected. Compliance with MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing protocols is required.


Ability to manage multiple tasks, work collaboratively, maintain regular attendance, and remain alert is essential.

Overall dexterity is necessary, including handling, reaching, grasping, and feeling, with potential repetition of these movements throughout the workday.
