Position Overview:
This role focuses on the coding of anesthesia services.


The individual in this position will be responsible for accurately coding all services related to both major and minor surgical procedures, as well as evaluation and management (E/M) levels conducted in various healthcare settings.

This role involves ensuring compliance with third-party payer guidelines while maximizing reimbursement opportunities.

The candidate must possess a comprehensive understanding of current payer regulations for all participating insurance companies, alongside analytical skills to guarantee precise coding for timely and accurate reimbursements.

Independence and decision-making abilities are essential, supported by a thorough knowledge of current procedure terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding standards.


Key Responsibilities:
(25%)* Code all E/M visits within 48 hours of receipt, applicable to both office and hospital settings.

(25%)* Utilize Epic coding edits, CPT Assistant, and CMS coding guidelines to amend ICD, CPT, HCPCS codes, modifiers, and place of service to ensure clean claims.

(20%)* Code all surgical cases, including obstetrics, within 48 hours of receipt for both office and hospital environments.

(20%)* Leverage clinical expertise to collaborate with physicians/providers regularly to enhance documentation quality.

(10%)* Show a commitment to ongoing education to improve coding proficiency.

Additional Duties:
Review accounts related to patient or payer inquiries, ensuring timely communication to address concerns.

Meet established productivity standards and undertake other assigned responsibilities.

Certifications Required:
AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) is mandatory.

Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A) is acceptable, with the expectation to obtain full certification within a specified timeframe.


Preferred certifications include Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P).


Certification in E/M coding (CPC, CCS, CCSP, RHIT, or RHIA) is required.


New hires with RHIT or RHIA degrees must obtain respective certification within a designated period.


Educational Requirements:
Associate's Degree is required.

Experience and Skills:
Preferred qualifications include two years of physician coding and billing experience, alongside four years in the medical field.

Direct physician interaction experience is also preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy is essential, along with proficiency in personal computer usage.

Understanding of medical record confidentiality laws and strong organizational skills are necessary.


Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required to convey ideas clearly.


Physical and Mental Requirements:
Ability to manage stressful situations, including public contact and exposure to trauma.

Must be capable of wearing personal protective equipment and moving freely within the facility.

Overall vision and hearing capabilities are necessary, with frequent requirements to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, maintain regular attendance, and work independently is crucial.


Physical Demand Level:
Sedentary; must occasionally lift or carry up to 10 lbs.
