Washington, United States World Wildlife Fund Full time
Position Overview
World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a prominent leader in global conservation efforts, is in search of an Ocean Conservation Research Specialist, Nature Positive.

Key Responsibilities
WWF's Oceans team has devised a comprehensive conservation strategy aimed at fostering vibrant oceans that not only support ecological health but also enhance human prosperity and global peace.

The strategy adopts an integrated perspective on ocean conservation, merging localized seascape initiatives with expansive market approaches and blue finance. It also anticipates the future challenges posed by climate change on oceanic health, societal stability, and security.

The ambitious objectives of this strategy focus on contributing significantly to a nature-positive future, where the degradation of natural ecosystems is halted and reversed through targeted seascape efforts and collaborations with both public and private sectors.

WWF is seeking an Ocean Conservation Research Specialist:
Nature Positive to perform scientific evaluations and formulate actionable, science-driven recommendations for critical stakeholders.

Under the guidance of the Director of Nature Positive for Oceans, the Ocean Conservation Research Specialist will play a vital role in creating scientific resources essential for stakeholders to effectively engage in promoting a nature-positive future. This role will also involve collaboration with seascapes to ensure that recommendations are aligned with locally driven integrated initiatives.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Advancing the scientific framework of the nature-positive concept as it pertains to marine environments.
  • Conducting thorough reviews and synthesizing pertinent literature, datasets, and evidence, translating complex information into accessible language when necessary.
  • Evaluating and analyzing indicators and datasets relevant to nature-positive outcomes, encompassing biodiversity, human impact, and climate considerations for marine ecosystems.
  • Contributing to the formulation of science-based recommendations tailored for external stakeholders.
  • Facilitating engagements with WWF's Ocean team's focal seascapes in relation to the nature-positive concept and scientific insights.
  • Enhancing collaborations with academic, research, or evaluation professionals.
  • Working in partnership within the organization to effectively communicate marine science insights into WWF policies and practices.
  • Coordinating efforts and disseminating information internally to ensure alignment with programmatic initiatives, as well as externally to interested institutions, donors, partner organizations, and the public through publications and presentations.
  • Building marine science capacity within WWF's conservation programs, particularly regarding the understanding of nature-positive concepts and indicators.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • A minimum of 4 years of marine or ocean-related experience and a master's degree (PhD preferred; current students are encouraged to apply).
  • Experience in international biodiversity conservation projects or related scientific fields.
  • Proven ability to develop actionable scientific products and communicate technical information to diverse audiences, including policymakers and corporate entities.
  • Familiarity with offshore wind and other ocean-related industries is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical capabilities, both quantitative and qualitative, are essential; spatial analytical skills are a plus.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity indicators and interdisciplinary methodologies is preferred.
  • Experience in integrating Indigenous knowledge with scientific understanding is beneficial.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Outstanding organizational and project management abilities.
  • Capacity to manage initiatives with multiple and competing priorities.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of individuals across various cultures and time zones.
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages is an asset.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive culture within and across teams.

Core Values Alignment
WWF values the following principles:
  • COURAGE: We act boldly to inspire change and tackle the most pressing threats to nature and our planet.
  • INTEGRITY: We uphold the principles we advocate, ensuring accountability and transparency in our actions.
  • RESPECT: We honor the voices and rights of the communities we serve, striving for a sustainable future for all.
  • COLLABORATION: We leverage collective action and innovation to address the challenges we face.
