POSITION SUMMARY
This professional-level role is pivotal in advancing Defenders of Wildlife's mission to protect and restore biodiversity through the establishment of innovative wildlife conservation initiatives, policies, and regulations. The Conservation Policy Specialist plays a crucial role in formulating and advocating for national policies, securing necessary funding, and fostering conservation partnerships aimed at promoting wildlife conservation on private lands.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct thorough research and analysis of federal and selected state laws, regulations, policies, and administrative initiatives related to wildlife conservation on private lands.
- Draft summaries, fact sheets, technical comments, and testimony to articulate policies and proposals, along with Defenders' stance on these matters.
- Collaborate with Government Relations staff to educate congressional offices on private lands conservation policy issues, identifying legislative supporters and coordinating outreach efforts.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with congressional staff, federal agency officials, state governments, landowner organizations, land trusts, and other stakeholders to achieve common conservation objectives.
- Participate in local, regional, or national meetings concerning private lands and state wildlife conservation policy.
- Research, write, and/or edit reports, webpages, blogs, social media content, and other publications for Defenders.
- Represent Defenders in public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, coalitions, and in communications with public officials, legislators, the media, and the general public to promote Defenders' goals.
- Collaborate with Development staff to secure operational funding for the Landscape Conservation department.
- Travel may be required for domestic engagements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's (B.A./B.S.) degree or equivalent
Experience: 4 years of relevant experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as a satisfactory substitute.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Administrative: Ability to maintain accurate electronic and physical records and meet the needs of stakeholders with excellent service.
- Communication: Strong ability to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
- Critical Thinking: Proficient in handling sensitive matters with discretion and conducting comprehensive research and data analysis.
- Project Management: Capable of managing multiple projects under tight deadlines while remaining adaptable to changing priorities.
- Coalition Engagement: Strong interpersonal skills to foster effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
- Conservation Knowledge: In-depth understanding of legal, scientific, and political issues related to wildlife conservation.
- Ability to perform light work, including moving objects up to 20 pounds.
- Work may involve outdoor elements and varying environmental conditions.
