POSITION SUMMARY
This professional-level role is integral to Defenders of Wildlife's mission of preserving and rejuvenating biodiversity through the establishment of innovative wildlife conservation strategies, policies, and legislation. The Policy Analyst plays a crucial role in formulating and advocating for national policies, securing necessary funding, and enhancing conservation collaborations aimed at wildlife preservation on private properties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct comprehensive research and analysis of federal and select state laws, regulations, policies, administrative initiatives, draft regulations, and federal projects pertinent to wildlife conservation on private lands.
- Draft summaries, fact sheets, technical comments, testimonies, and other documents that articulate policies and proposals, as well as Defenders' stance on these matters.
- Collaborate with Government Relations personnel to inform congressional offices about private lands conservation policy issues. Assist in identifying legislative advocates and coordinating outreach to advance a progressive conservation agenda.
- Establish and nurture productive relationships with congressional staff, federal agency representatives, state governments, landowner organizations, land trusts, and other stakeholders to achieve mutual conservation objectives.
- Participate in local, regional, or national meetings concerning private lands and state wildlife conservation policy.
- Research, compose, and/or edit Defenders' reports, web content, blogs, social media, and other publications.
- Represent Defenders in public forums, hearings, press events, conferences, coalitions, and in communications with public officials, legislators, the media, Defenders' members, donors, and the general public to promote Defenders' goals.
- Collaborate with Development staff to secure operational funding for Defenders' Landscape Conservation department.
- Travel may be required, involving some domestic trips.
