Job Overview

Penske Racing South is seeking a skilled Electrical Technician specializing in motorsport wiring to become an integral part of our dynamic racing team. This role is essential for our competitive endeavors in high-stakes racing events, requiring significant travel both nationally and internationally throughout the racing season.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, construct, troubleshoot, and maintain wiring harnesses and looms for motorsport applications.
  • Oversee the programming and upkeep of communication devices.
  • Collaborate with the parts department to facilitate orders from external suppliers.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of wiring systems and sensors in conjunction with systems engineers.
  • Work closely with Systems Engineers to ensure reliable communication systems within the race vehicles.
  • Assist in the setup, maintenance, and configuration of trackside IT networks, along with general IT responsibilities.
  • Conduct assembly, disassembly, and maintenance of race cars, ensuring adherence to safety and efficiency standards.
  • Meet strict deadlines for race car preparation while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Implement necessary adjustments to vehicles as per established protocols during races and testing, collaborating with various team members to achieve optimal performance.
  • Perform disassembly, cleaning, and non-destructive testing of race car components.
  • Support all mileage tracking and parts management initiatives, including documentation and data entry.
  • Keep accurate records of modifications made to adjustable components during post-race evaluations.
  • Adhere to safety protocols while operating equipment, utilizing protective gear, and promptly reporting any hazards.
  • Engage in open communication with colleagues in manufacturing and engineering to develop high-quality components.
  • Mentor less experienced technicians to ensure quality control and foster a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Represent the team and its sponsors professionally in all settings.
  • Participate in physical training programs aimed at enhancing strength and endurance for competitive performance.
  • Willingness to travel with the team for races and testing is essential.
  • Contribute to the pit stop crew, including participation in training and fitness programs.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a professional motorsport electrical technician role.
  • Experience in F1, IndyCar, IMSA, WEC, or Formula E is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in trackside positions is advantageous.
  • Proven experience in designing, constructing, and maintaining motorsport wiring systems.
  • Ability to travel internationally is a requirement.
  • Familiarity with radio and intercom systems, including programming and maintenance, is preferred.
  • General IT and networking skills are beneficial.
  • Comprehensive understanding of race car setup specifications and safety mechanisms.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Ability to meet professional performance standards as part of the pit crew.
  • Capability to interpret and follow setup designs for races and tests.
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical components, electronics, and structural frameworks of race cars.
  • Experience with manual tools such as lathes, mills, drill presses, and band saws.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments.
