Director of Policy and Government Affairs

The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) has been a prominent voice for the Jewish community, fostering connections among diverse groups to promote a just society and ensure a secure future for Jewish individuals. Position Overview

The primary aim of this role is to spearhead JCRC's outreach initiatives with governmental representatives and to further the organization's policy goals through education, relationship development, advocacy, and lobbying efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Relationship Building with Government Officials (50%)

  • Lead initiatives to establish and maintain connections with local and state elected officials, including legislators, mayors, and council members.
  • Design and implement educational and engagement activities for elected leaders, such as training sessions, community events, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Represent JCRC at various community, political, and nonprofit events.
  • Create resources, talking points, and written materials to support elected officials in promoting JCRC's objectives.

Public Policy Leadership and Advocacy (25%)

  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Jewish Affairs to set annual policy goals and execute strategies to advance relevant legislation.
  • Engage in advocacy activities, including legislative drafting, direct lobbying, and public testimony.
  • Oversee the JCRC Public Policy Committee, which advises on policy proposals and legislative advocacy.
  • Act as the policy expert for JCRC, liaising with staff, the Jewish community, and civic partners.

Management of the Bay Area Network of Jewish Elected Officials (BANJO) (15%)

  • Organize innovative programs and events to meet the networking and educational needs of BANJO members.
  • Enhance BANJO by recruiting new members and supporting existing leaders.
  • Develop resources to assist members in their roles as local officials.

Coordination of Annual Educational Trip to Israel (10%)

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director of External Affairs, plan and execute educational trips to Israel for community and elected leaders.
  • Manage logistical aspects of the trip, including participant registration and communication.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree is required; a graduate degree in public policy or a related field is preferred.
  • Four to eight years of experience in relationship building within government affairs, political campaigns, or advocacy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the legislative process at the state and local levels.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex information for public understanding.
  • Familiarity with Jewish identity, history, and community issues.
  • Understanding of the Bay Area's Jewish community and political landscape is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism in diverse interactions.
  • Willingness to attend evening events and travel as needed.
