San Francisco VA Health Care System is a Level 1a major interdisciplinary teaching facility with service- lines serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients, with a Level II Emergency Department, and multiple community-based outpatient clinics (CBOC).
There is a large inpatient/outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. Home-Based Primary Care nursing care is also provided.Duties for the position may include but are not limited to:
Provides executive leadership and direct supervision to the Nurse Managers over the following critical care units:
ICU, TCU, ER and the Nursing Supervisors that support the acute services 24/7.
Assess, plan, and evaluates the processes and daily operations of the inpatient units
Assist Nurse Managers and APNs to carry out the functions and activities of their roles.
Mentors and utilizes Clinical Nurse Leaders and other staff members to support RNs in a transition to practice role.
Supports RN residency programs.Assures competencies for all levels of nursing staffing working within HCS, assuring all who float have the correct documented competencies.
Supports the development of Evidence Based Practice Culture throughout HCS.Develops and utilizes strong collaborative relationships with physician counterparts including, but not limited to, Chief of Medicine, Chief of Surgery, Chief Resident and Chief Hospitalist.
In collaboration with the Chiefs of other services, designs, and implements interdisciplinary programs within the service and medical center.
Planning, organizing, directing, and controlling service-wide infrastructure issues which include overall operation of the service.Has significant medical center and service policy responsibilities.
Serves on or Co-Chairs the Nursing Pharmacy Committee, active participant in the Equipment Committee, monitors and participates in Infection control measures, safe patient handling, workplace violence, electronic inventory and managing equipment life cycle planning and replacement.
Responsible for assessing and recommending the allocation of human and material resources, in determining staffing levels using NHPPD, managing overtime and playing a significant role in the recruitment and retention of nursing staff.
Ensures competency assessment is completed on each nursing employee annually.Reviews EPRP, IPEC, Performance Measures and other data for trends and early intervention, formulates follow-up plans with Nurse Executive Team, Nurse Manages, the service and medical center.
Sets, monitors, and attains annual strategic goals for HCS.Supports professional development of nursing staff, development and completion of quality projects and staff member involvement in professional organizations locally, regionally, and nationally.
Collaborates with Chief of SPS to address issues related to instrumentation and other RME-related matters in their areas.Serves as Acting Associate Director, Patient Care Service and Nurse Executive or Deputy ADPCS as needed.
